Jury deliberations halted as tensions rise in Charleston murder trial

CHARLESTON, W.Va – The fate of Barack Williams, the teenager charged with felony murder in connection with a robbery that left Caden Martin, a Charleston tobacco store clerk, dead last year, is in the hands of the jury.
Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers turned the case over to the jury following the conclusion of closing arguments around 11 am Monday, and deliberations came to a halt more than 90 minutes later after the judge received a note from the jury room.

West Virginia officials say the state budget outlook is all right

Shortly after Gov. Patrick Morrisey came into office early this year, his administration warned of a possible $400 million budget gap up ahead.
Today, entering a new budget season, representatives of his administration painted a far more Goldilocks scenario. It’s not that there aren’t financial pressures, but officials said the state is in reasonable position to handle them.

2,500 signs donated for ‘In God We Trust’ motto law

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Signs displaying the motto “In God We Trust” are beginning to be placed in school classrooms around the state.

The bill, passed by state lawmakers earlier this year, became law in July.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Mike Azinger, R-Wood, and others appeared for an event a the sate capitol Monday where the signs were displayed. First Liberty Institute and Patriot Mobile have paid for 2,500 that are being donated to the state.

WVU announces internal employment transition for several hundred workers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Effective Oct. 31, hundreds of West Virginia University Research Corporation (WVURC) employees will transition to direct employment for WVU.
In addition to streamlining processes and improving access to resources, officials said the move will better align the infrastructure and mission of the institution.

$1 million Powerball ticket sold in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The official Powerball website says there was a $1 million Match 5 winner in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing where the jackpot had grown to $1.8 billion.
Two winning tickets for the overall jackpot were sold in Missouri and Texas. There were 19 $1 million winners and one of those purchased a ticket in West Virginia.
Match 5 means the ticket hit all numbers but the Powerball.
Those winning numbers Saturday were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and the Powerball was 17.

Juvenile dead in weekend shooting in Greenbrier County

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — A juvenile is dead after a weekend shooting in Greenbrier County.
Sheriff Bart Baker reported deputies and EMS were dispatched to a home in the Clintonville area of Greenbrier County around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. On the way to the call, emergency officials learned there was a juvenile gunshot victim involved.

Bluefield State University sees highest enrollment rate since pandemic, shifts focus to retention efforts

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. –Bluefield State University’s fall enrollment numbers are the highest the university has seen, continuing its trend of rising enrollment since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university recently announced that Fall 2025 enrollment reached 1,442 students, a 10% increase from last fall. They have seen a notable increase in first-time freshmen, with 313 students enrolled this year compared to 218 last year.
