State’s first horror film fest to get underway this fall, organizers currently seeking submissions

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Those into the horror movie genre as well as film production can now start the submission process for West Virginia’s first-ever horror film festival set to launch this fall.
The event will be hosted by Deadhead Productions, an independent horror production company founded out of St. Albans in 2018. It’s set to be held at the Historic Alban Theater November 1.

McDowell County Schools Superintendent says summer will be used for catching students up after the February floods caused them to miss two weeks

MCDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. –McDowell County Schools Superintendent Ingrida Barker says that they made sure that they didn’t let any instructional time go to waste after they returned to school two weeks after the mid-February flooding that hit.
“We used that very wisely, trying to give the students as much instruction as we could,” Barker said on MetroNews Talkline Tuesday morning.
The school year officially ended on June 5, 15 weeks after the devastating flooding hit the area on February 15 and 16.

Annual Golden Horseshoe awards ceremonies continue its longtime tradition of honoring state’s eighth graders who excel in West Virginia studies

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Over 200 students across the state are joining the thousands who have come before to be dubbed Knights and Ladies of the prestigious Golden Horseshoe.
Since 1931, eighth grade students across West Virginia who excel in the state’s history and social studies, and who score high on the Golden Horseshoe exam, have been receiving this honor, and Tuesday was no exception as the tradition carried on.

Greenbrier County cracks down on illegal sale of vape products

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Armed with information from the Greenbrier County School Board and the school system employees, law enforcement in Greenbrier County has cracked down on the illegal sale of vapes and THC products to underage consumers.
“The students are saying they’re able to just walk in and buy these things themselves. When we heard that we were specifically alarmed by that information that these people were just selling to anyone without even checking an ID,” said Greenbrier County

One dead in Harrison County fire

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — One person died in a structure fire near Nutter Fort in Harrison County Tuesday morning.
The fire was reported at around 7:30 along state Route 20 about halfway between Clarksburg and Nutter Fort. Firefighters brought the fire under control by 8:15 a.m.
The name of the person killed in the blaze has not been released.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
Firefighters from Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Nutter Fort responded. The Clarksburg Police Department assisted.

South Charleston police investigate stabbing

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police say a man suffered multiple stab wounds in an early morning domestic dispute in South Charleston.
According to South Charleston police, a man and woman were in a relationship and got into a fight around 3 a.m. Tuesday at the apartment they shared at the Stratford Apartment complex on
East Village Drive.
Police said the woman suffered wounds consistent with being beaten up and the boyfriend was stabbed in the confrontation. Both were taken to the hospital early

WV Capitol basement soaked with thousands of gallons of water after line break

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Several departments set up in the basement of the West Virginia Capitol building have been scrambling to move items out of their respective offices after over 100,000 gallons of water settled into the bottom floor.
According to Bob Kilpatrick, the director of General Services Division for the West Virginia Department of Administration, a bolt failed on a four-inch chilled waterline Sunday afternoon, dumping nearly three inches of water in some parts of the basement.
