Disaster relief organizations express concern about FEMA’s future, shrinking number of case managers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Groups that play a key role in helping West Virginias recover when disasters hit are concerned what the future may be if there are major changes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Longtime UC First Lady Janet Welch dead at 88

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Charleston has announced that former First Lady Dr. Janet Welch died on Saturday at the age of 88.
Dr. Janet Welch
Welch, a Sissonville native, served as the first lady from 1989 until 2018 while her husband, Dr. Ed Welch, led the university.
Welch was known as a staple in the community and “beloved presence” across the UC campus.
Perhaps Welch’s most lasting project is the Erma Byrd West Virginia Women Artists Gallery. The galley features 155 pieces of art

W.Va. National Guard members help locate missing autistic man in D.C.

 
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Soldiers from the West Virginia National Guard are credited with helping to locate a missing autistic man during their ongoing patrols in Washington D.C.
During a routine patrol in support of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission a private security guard approached the soldiers who were at D.C.’s Union Station to ask for their assistance in locating a missing person. Initially they were told it was a missing autistic child, but the report was later amended to be an adult.

It’s only Week 3, don’t give up yet

It was a tough weekend for college football fans in West Virginia, as both WVU and Marshall experienced unexpected early losses.
The Mountaineers fell to Ohio by a score of 17-10, marking their first defeat to a Group of 5 school since 2008. The offense struggled, and running back Jaheim White was carted off the field with a knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Additionally, receiver Jaden Bray suffered a foot injury and will also miss the remainder of the year.

Ascend West Virginia website already seeing new traffic after adding Charleston to program

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It’s been less than three days since out-of-state residents have been able to apply to live in West Virginia’s capitol city through the Ascend program, but there’s already dozens across the country chomping at the bid to be selected.

Gov. Morrisey orders flags at half-staff Tuesday to honor former senator Walt Helmick

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Flags are set to be lowered to half-staff Tuesday beginning at noon at the Capitol and state facilities throughout the state to commemorate the life and service of former senator and state agriculture secretary Walt Helmick.
Governor Patrick Morrisey made the order Monday afternoon. Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of internment.
Helmick, 81, passed away after a battle with cancer.

Jahiem White, Jaden Bray ruled out for season

West Virginia’s trip to Peden Stadium brought more bad fortune outside of a 17-10 loss to Ohio that marked the Mountaineers’ first setback to a Group of 5 opponent in 17 years.
Rich Rodriguez announced on his weekly radio show Monday the team’s worst fears were realized and both tailback Jahiem White and wideout Jaden Brady will miss what remains of the 2025 season.
