Pitt’s Reid poses challenge to WVU defense

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — When West Virginia and Pitt clash at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 108th edition of the Backyard Brawl, much of the Mountaineers’ ability to play with the Panthers will hinge on the offense fixing issues that surfaced throughout the final three quarters of last week’s 17-10 loss at Ohio.
On the flip side, Pitt’s offense has had no such struggles through two games, with the Panthers piling up points against inferior competition in Duquesne and Central Michigan. Pitt enters with

Gibson wants Herd focused on seizing opportunities as quest for first win continues

— By Bill Cornwell
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — One or two plays.
That’s what Marshall football coach Tony Gibson says his 0-2 Thundering Herd team needed to make last Saturday to change the result of what turned out to be a 21-20 loss to Missouri State at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
It’s not hard to find some of the deficient plays. The Marshall defense had problems getting off the field in the second half as Missouri State hit several screen passes for big gains. Offensively, Marshall had problems

Appalachian Power says key to stopping rate hikes is more rate payers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Appalachian Power is ready to move forward with securitization of funds to help offset a much larger rate hike they requested for customers. The West Virginia Public Service Commission recently granted part of the company’s requested rate hike through the securitization. The process allows the company to sell bonds to recoup money invested instead of increasing prices on customers.
Appalachian Power Communications Director George Porter said that’s helpful, but it’s not the
