Wind farm construction approved for Grant, Tucker Counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –A settlement agreement that gives Catamount Wind, LLC the right to construct a wind farm in Grant and Tucker Counties was granted approval Friday by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia.
The agreement was filed with the commission on May 28 and it reduces the number of wind turbines from the original 72 to 37. It also extends the length of the blades from 499 feet to 640 feet.

Funeral arrangements announced for well-known businessman and former lawmaker Doug Skaff

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The funeral arrangements for former West Virginia lawmaker and businessman Doug Skaff were announced by Snodgrass Funeral Home Friday afternoon.
Those wanting to honor Skaff’s life and legacy are invited to the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston on Monday, 16, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A private service and burial is set to be held Tuesday.

Treasurer Pack reminds parents of Hope Scholarship application deadlines

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The deadline to receive full funding from the Hope Scholarship for the 2025-2026 school year is set for this Sunday.
Hope Scholarship is given to eligible K-12 students to help with financial assistance for tuition, fees, and other expenses.

In a first meeting after controversial legislation removed faculty, staff and students as voting members of higher education boards of governors, the governing board at West Virginia University dramatically changed its top leadership.

Five arrested in Greenbrier County drug investigation

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Greenbrier County deputies say a compliance check at a home in the Fairlea community led to a significant drug bust in their county this week.
The county’s adult probation office was doing a spot check on the home of Todd Brown who is on probation. The probation officers noticed several pieces of drug paraphernalia and possibly illegal drugs. They communicated their findings to the sheriff’s department who obtained a search warrant for the premises.

Early morning apartment fire under investigation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –A “very active investigation” is underway after an apartment building caught fire early Friday morning in Charleston.
According to emergency crews the blaze was reported at the Vista View apartments in the 100 Block of Renaissance Circle around 5 a.m. Charleston Fire Department Captain David Hodges said that flames that were on the seventh floor was extinguished by sprinklers and suppression efforts by firefighters.

State military leaders past and present mark Army’s 250th birthday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Saturday is the 250th birthday of the United States Army and commemoration of the the 25-day, 600-mile march to Massachusetts to battle the siege of Boston in Shepherdstown.

Winfield’s Mattie Carroll named state’s top softball player

Winfield softball pitcher Mattie Carroll is a winner — again.
After capping her junior season by leading the Generals to their third consecutive state championship, Carroll was named by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association as the Player of the Year on Friday.

911 Call offers chilling details of attack on a woman last week in Jackson County

RIPLEY, W.Va. — A series of 911 calls a week ago in Jackson County painted a chilling picture of a crime in the southern end of the county. Logan Willis of Oak Hill, W.Va. made the initial call to 911 and can be heard confessing to what he thought was a murder.
“I’m going to the Exxon in Kenna. I got into a fight with somebody really bad I think I might have killed them,” Willis told the 911 dispatcher.

Raleigh County man faces a number of sexual abuse, incest, and other charges of a graphic nature

BECKLEY,  W.Va. — A Raleigh County man is facing over 150 charges on allegations of sexual abuse, incest, and gross child neglect.
Kenneth Cook
Law enforcement officials say Kenneth Ray Cook, 43, of MacArthur allegedly had a non-consensual, incestuous relationship with his daughter which resulted in the birth of three children who were found to be suffering from neglect.
Cook faces a total of 149 counts of Gross Neglect of a child creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury,
