House passes pay raise bill for teachers, school service personnel, troopers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The House of Delegates passed a three percent pay raise for state troopers, teachers and school service personnel Thursday.

The pay raise under HB 4765 will average about $1800 for those three groups of workers including about $1500 for teachers and $900 for school service personnel.
State law requires lawmakers to pass bills for pay raises for those three groups of workers because their salary schedules are in state code.

With federal dollars secured, Salango details next steps for Capital Sports Center project

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – City and county officials are ready to take the next steps toward construction of the Capital Sports Center after the announcement of $7 million in congressionally directed spending to help jumpstart the project.

Not 5%, not 10%, House budget proposal does not have governor’s priority tax cut

The House Finance Committee rolled out a budget proposal that does not build in Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s tax cut priority.
The House budget reflects average 3% pay raises for public employees. It also restores some cuts that had been proposed for education and higher education. It reflects some changes to the Hope Scholarship for people opting out of public schools, particularly a quarterly funding system.

WVSSAC Girls Basketball regional brackets

VIENNA, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission has released brackets for the regional round of the girls basketball playoffs. Seeds were voted upon by coaches within their regions.
Single-elimination play is in place for all rounds. Two teams from each region in Class AAA, Class AA and Class A will advance to the state tournament. Four teams from each region will advance to the state tournament from Class AAAA.

Appalachian Power clarifies status of Black Diamond Power sale talks

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Appalachian Power Company says it does not have a deal in place to purchase Black Diamond Power, nearly one week after Black Diamond’s president announced his intention to sell the company.
APCo released a statement on Thursday specifying that while the utility is in discussions to purchase Black Diamond, it is still evaluating its options and that there is no assurance an agreement can be reached.

Out-of-state trucker arrested for alleged crimes involving teenage girl in West Virginia

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. — A state-to-state truck driver is in jail in West Virginia after he allegedly had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 16-year-old Wood County girl he met online.

Discussion underway for legislation to require teachers to wear mobile alert button

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The House Education Committee began discussion Wednesday on legislation that would require a wearable panic alert system, known as Alyssa’s Law, in schools across all 55 counties.
