Showing up: Presence makes a difference

Leaders underestimate their impact in showing up. Why? I find most leaders do not see themselves as special. They see themselves as being the same as others.
A highlight of my career was working with the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Floyd (Fred) Loop, the CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF) at the time, hired my company. (Dr. Loop is no longer with us physically; however, his impact lives on.) He referred to the work as “providing world-class care.”
Dr. Loop was a private person. For the

Hints From Heloise

Reader comments on digging holes
Dear Heloise: Calling 811 before you dig a hole for a bush is a waste of the investigator’s time and a needless expense. Now if you’re planting a tree with a substantial-sized root ball (with perhaps a contractor who uses a large hydraulic spade), make the call by all means. Generally, service lines are required to be buried 24-30 inches below the ground’s surface. — Bob Osterholt, via email

WVU and UCF both in a must-win situation today

MORGANTOWN —The second half of the season starts this Saturday for West Virginia with another road game against UCF. WVU’s season hasn’t gone according to Rich Rodriguez’s plan so far, and it has lost the last three games, which were all against Big 12 opponents.
It’s time to see if Rodriguez can turn this season around and create the momentum WVU AD Wren Baker said he was looking for in Rodriguez’s first season back in August.
Luckily, Rodriguez fared well off of a bye week with a 21-8 record

Senate Dems reject funding bill for 10th time

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats rejected for the 10th time Thursday a stopgap spending bill that would reopen the government, insisting they won’t back away from demands that Congress take up health care benefits.
The vote failed on a 51-45 tally, well short of the 60 needed to advance with the Senate’s filibuster rules.
The repetition of votes on the funding bill has become a daily drumbeat in Congress, underscoring how intractable the situation has become. It has been at times the only item

Making Cents: Pack raising profile of State Treasurer

CHARLESTON — Look just about anywhere and you’ll find State Treasurer Larry Pack. From ribbon-cuttings to visits with local government officials, from interviews and op-eds to unclaimed property check presentations, Pack is raising the office’s profile.
But Pack’s activities have also raised questions about his plans for his political future, which could involve a run for governor in 2028, challenging Gov. Patrick Morrisey in a Republican primary.
During an interview Thursday in his offices in
