Man arrested after driving through barricade in Upshur

BUCKHANNON – A man was arrested Sunday for driving through a barricaded section of flood-damaged road in Upshur County, Sheriff J. Michael Coffman said.
On Sunday, “deputies with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office arrested Larry Christopher Alderman, 53, of French Creek, West Virginia, following an incident at a road closure on Stonecoal Road,” the Upshur Sheriff’s Office press release stated.

NWS: Tornado touched down in Barbour County

PARKERSBURG – Multiple tornadoes were recorded in West Virginia last week, including one in Barbour County, the National Weather Service said.
Three tornadoes that touched down in Washington County and crossed the Ohio River into West Virginia last week were likely on the ground at the same time, according to the NWS.

Elkins mayor to temporarily head police department

ELKINS — Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco will temporarily oversee the Elkins Police Department’s operations until a new Chief of Police is appointed and takes office.
During Elkins City Council’s Thursday night meeting, seven present council members voted to allow Marco to “directly exercise supervisory and administrative authority” over the Elkins Police Department until a new Chief of Police is appointed by the Council. On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Nasra Adan will present her amazing travel photographs again this year for her fourth summer slide show at Kump Education Center.
Nasra and her husband teach overseas and return to Elkins with their two sons each summer to visit his parents, John and Ginny Zuboy.
Adan’s photos have taken us to Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Pakistan. This year she will share her photographs of Italy. We will see images of ancient Rome where Caesar Augustus was Emperor when Jesus was born.

Interact Children’s Museum offering public tour

ELKINS – The public is invited to attend a Hard Hat Tour on Sunday afternoon of the Interact Children’s Museum, located on the corner of Third Street and Davis Avenue.
The public tour will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday.
In 2025, the Interact Children’s Museum Board of Directors signed a two-year lease with Seneca Mall LLC for use of the historic Dann Building.
The Museum creates “opportunities for children and families to connect, engage, and explore through hands-on play,” the ICM website states.

Police identify two people killed in Upshur flooding

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia State Police has released the identities of the two individuals who lost their lives during this week’s flooding in Upshur County.
Judy A. Young, 59, of Upshur County, and James J. Harper, 61, of Upshur County, were found deceased inside a vehicle that was recovered from the Stonecoal Lake area of Upshur County, according to a State Police press release Friday afternoon.

Residents recover after suspected tornadoes

ST. MARYS – One day after a storm system that dropped possibly two tornadoes into Pleasants County Tuesday afternoon, residents of Blue Devil country were doing what they always do – giving each other a helping hand.
Tuesday’s storm left a trail of damage, from the border of Belmont to the Hi-Carpenter Bridge in St. Marys, knocking down signage. Then a trail of broken trees and snapped power lines went east of town out Green’s Run Road and Route 16, demolishing cell and radio towers.

DUI incident leads to 16 charges

PHILIPPI — A Florida man faces 16 charges after allegedly assaulting and threatening officers during an arrest for driving under the influence.
Leodegario Gutierrez Mejia, 32, of Arcadia, Florida, is charged with four counts of battery on an officer second offense, two counts of threats of terrorist acts and one count of intimidation of and retaliation against public officers.
