Stepping back from toxic in-laws

Dear Annie: I’ve been happily married for more than 40 years. The one shadow on that happiness has been my relationship with my husband’s family, especially my mother-in-law. From the beginning, she has never seemed to like me. I honestly do not know why. Over the years, she has been dismissive and unkind, and I have usually stayed quiet to keep the peace.
My two sisters-in-law also seem to dislike me. One actually told me she was jealous because I was “pretty,” which felt strange and childish.

Europe’s rising diversity is not reflected at the Winter Olympics. Culture plays a big role

VASTERAS, Sweden (AP) — Maryan Hashi remembers the thoughts running through her mind when she began hitting the ski slopes in northern Sweden. As a Black woman from Somalia, she felt like an “alien.”
“Am I wearing the correct clothing for this? Does it fit? Do I look weird? Am I snowboarding correctly? Do they think it’s weird I’m on the slope?” she said. “But I carried on — I felt if I didn’t, I was never going to commit to anything in my life.”
A few years later, snowboarding is the

Horoscope

Mars and Pluto conjunct in Aquarius ask, “How would things be now if you had gotten everything you wanted back then?” Perhaps not as good. Sometimes we want what’s best for us, but often hindsight has us happy we didn’t always get our way. So, when you wish the cosmic gift came with a gift receipt, just wait a season. Maybe it’s actually something you can use.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’re not trying to make a memory, but you’ll make one anyway. In fact, you can assume others will remember

WVU flips the running back room

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia running back Tye Edwards lined up behind center with just a few yards until the end zone. Edwards took the handoff from quarterback Nicco Marchiol, behind extra linemen, and punched it in for the go-ahead overtime touchdown against Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.
The best moments from the 2025 season were when backs like Diore Hubbard was moving bodies against Houston, or Cyncir Bowers caught the checkdown, taking off for a long touchdown against Arizona State.
But now,

In Federal Reserve case, Court appears to carve out a murky exception

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court for the past year has repeatedly allowed President Donald Trump to fire heads of independent agencies, but it appears to be drawing a line with the Federal Reserve.
The court has signaled for months that it sees the Fed in a different light. It has said that the president can fire directors of other agencies for any reason, but can remove Fed governors only “for cause,” which is often interpreted to mean neglect of duty or malfeasance.
Last year, the court

Mangione’s federal murder trial set to begin on Sept. 8

NEW YORK (AP) — Luigi Mangione’s federal murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson will begin with jury selection Sept. 8, a judge said Friday.
U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett said scheduling of the rest of the trial, including opening statements and testimony, is contingent on whether she allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty. It’s one of several issues the judge is weighing.
If the death penalty is still in play, the next phase of the trial will begin Jan.

Maine governor questions ‘secret arrests,’ sheriff says ICE targeted one of his recruits

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic governor challenged federal immigration officials Thursday to provide warrants, real-time arrest numbers and basic information about who is being detained in a sweeping enforcement operation in her state, saying residents have been left largely in the dark as fear spreads through immigrant communities.
“If they have warrants, show the warrants. In America, we don’t believe in secret arrests or secret police,” Gov. Janet Mills said at a news conference.
