‘Caravan’ to success

ELKINS — The Randolph County Board of Education voted against Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly’s recommendations to close and consolidate two schools during a nearly four-hour public hearing Tuesday night.
Both Coalton Elementary and Midland Elementary will remain open after votes from the BOE swung in both schools’ favor. The Board voted 3-2 against the closing of Midland and 4-1 against the closing of Coalton.

26 indicted by Barbour Grand Jury

PHILIPPI — A Barbour County Grand Jury handed down indictments involving 26 individuals this week, for alleged crimes including grand larceny, sexual assault, and child neglect creating risk of death or serious bodily injury.
Larry Lee Trader Jr. was indicted six counts of sexual abuse in the first degree, 12 counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian, and four counts of distribution and display to a minor or obscene matter.

Louise Dora Bell Higgins

Louise Dora Bell Higgins, 91, a resident of Montrose, passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, at her home. She was in her usual health and death was unexpected.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon, Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Dave Collins officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bell Cemetery at Kelly Mountain.

Randolph BOE votes against closing Coalton, Midland schools

ELKINS – The Randolph County Board of Education voted against closing Coalton Elementary School and Midland Elementary School at the end of a nearly four-hour public hearing Tuesday evening.
The vote to close Coalton was four against and one in favor. The vote to close Midland was three against and two in favor.
The crowd in attendance at the Elkins High School Theatre erupted in applause after the votes, which were taken just after 9 p.m.
The BOE voted earlier this month to close Harman K-12
