Moore, Miller vote to send Big Beautiful Bill to Trump’s desk

 
CHARLESTON — Meeting a self-imposed deadline to get a bill to the desk of President Donald Trump by Independence Day, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Thursday afternoon.
U.S. Reps. Carol Miller and Riley Moore, both R-W.Va., joined a slim majority in voting for the H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, in a 218-214 vote, after the U.S. Senate amended and passed the bill Tuesday in a tiebreaker 51-50 vote.

City donates camera to EHS classes

ELKINS — Elkins City Council has approved the donation of a city-owned “surplus camera” to Elkins High School.
Seven of the eight City Council members present at the most recent council meeting approved a resolution to donate a Fujifilm X-S10 digital SLR camera, with an 18-55mm lens, to EHS to be used by the school’s yearbook and journalism staff.

Team physicians in college sports wary of greater liability risk with athletes now making big money

(AP) — The professionalization of college sports has prompted concern among team physicians that they will be exposed to a greater risk of being sued by athletes who claim a poor outcome from treatment caused them to lose future earnings.

First immigration detainees arrive at center in Everglades

(AP) — The first group of immigrants has arrived at a new detention center deep in the Florida Everglades that officials have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a spokesperson for Republican state Attorney General James Uthmeier told The Associated Press.

Carl Edward Nine

Carl Edward Nine, 82, a resident of Montrose, West Virginia, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2025, at WVU Medicine’s United Hospital Center at Bridgeport, West Virginia. Death was unexpected.
He was born Saturday, Oct. 10, 1942, at Tucker County, West Virginia, a son of the late Jacob Richard Nine and Virginia Watring Nine.
On May 8, 1965, he was married to the former Dorothy Lou Funk, who preceded him in death, March 29, 2009.

ELKINS — City officials have thanked former Fifth Ward Council member David Parker for his 10 years of service to the community.

Wisconsin Supreme Court strikes down abortion ban

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s liberal majority struck down the state’s 176-year-old abortion ban on Wednesday, ruling 4-3 that it was superseded by newer state laws regulating the procedure, including statutes that criminalize abortions only after a fetus can survive outside the womb.
