Capito expresses continuing frustration over shutdown, takes mass layoffs threat seriously

Senator Shelley Moore Capito remains frustrated as a federal shutdown stretches into its third day, and she expressed concern that the executive branch could make good on threats to to conduct mass permanent layoffs in the federal workforce as the shutdown continues.
The Senate was set to reconvene and vote on whether to take up two different proposals to reopen the government, but neither was expected to win the bipartisan backing necessary to end the shutdown.

Charges filed in connection with Boone County collision

VAN, W.Va. — A Boone County man is charged with striking a pedestrian with his vehicle and then leaving the scene.
Calvin Buckner, 49, of Van, was arrested Thursday after police received a tip about damage to his vehicle.
A teenager was on the side of Route 85 near Van Community Park when he’s was hit by the vehicle. State police said the victim suffered serious injuries and is hospitalized.
Buckner told troopers he thought he hit a bird flying across the highway.

Memorial Ruck returns to remember Marines lost in barrack attack in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983

PIPESTEM, W.Va. –The Marine Corps League will be hosting a memorial and a Memorial Ruck this weekend at Pipestem Resort State Park to honor the Marines who lost their lives in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983.
Elisa Camara, the sister of Mecot Camara, one of the Marines killed in the attack on October 23, 1983, will be in attendance

Cases over religious exemptions to school vaccinations are filed in Kanawha, Jefferson

Kanawha has joined several other counties across West Virginia with a court case over religious exemptions to the vaccines required for public school.
And a case has been filed in magistrate court in Jefferson County as well.
Similar court cases have been playing out in Raleigh, Berkeley, Gilmer and Mineral counties. Judges have split so far on lawsuits from families suing over religious exemptions to mandatory school vaccinations. A permanent injunction case picks up again next week in Raleigh

Marshall University Kanawha Valley Alumni Chapter hosts official kickoff event

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Over a dozen Marshall alumni were joined by university officials Thursday evening at the Ruffner House in Charleston for the official launch of the Kanawha Valley Alumni Chapter.
Chapter President Melanie Pagliaro said the group has been meeting quietly for over a year, but they just hadn’t held a formal launch event until now.

Elkins pastor charged with solicitation

ELKINS, W.Va. — A Randolph County pastor is charged with allegedly using a computer to solicit an underage girl.
The Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force alleges Kevin Curtis Jones, 33, of Elkins, the pastor at Summit Church, used a phone to seek a “clandestine relationship“ with the girl in December 2023,
According to the criminal complaint, the girl attended Jones’ church. She is now older than 18.
The charge against Jones is a felony. He was arrested Thursday. Bail was set at
