No. 7 University 35, No. 2 Huntington 28 — For the first time since 2009, University will play in the state semifinals. The Hawks (9-3) knocked off the Highlanders (9-3), 35-28. UHS awaits the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between No. 6 Wheeling Park and No. 3 Martinsburg next weekend.

Mountaineers relinquish late lead, suffer first loss of season to Clemson, 70-67

After posting a perfect five-game homestand to open up the season, the WVU men’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season in a 70-67 setback against Clemson in the opening game of the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic in South Carolina.
Clemson jumped out to a 15-9 lead at the 12:30 mark of the first half. However, the Mountaineers outscored Clemson 23-10 for the remainder of the half to build a 32-25 lead at intermission.

Jefferson secures first state semifinal appearance with 28-21 win over GW

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — A second one-score victory over George Washington allowed Jefferson to set a new benchmark in program history. The No. 4 Cougars scored four touchdowns in the game’s final three quarters to defeat No. 5 George Washington, 28-21 in the Class AAAA quarterfinal round.
The semifinal appearance is the first for the Cougars. They had been eliminated in the quarterfinal round in each of the last four seasons.

Suspected Pagan takes plea deal in Silver murder case

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The suspected leader of the Pagan Motorcycle Club, Marion County resident Ryan Lane, has accepted a plea deal in the Henry Silver murder case.
The state has agreed to drop murder and conspiracy charges in exchange for a no contest plea to organized criminal enterprise, a felony.
Lane could face up to 10 years in prison at sentencing.
Lane’s trial on a murder charge ended in a mistrial in September when a jury could not reach a verdict.

Mother pleads guilty in connection with teens death

BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. –The mother of a Boone County teenager who was found dead in a “skeletal state” pleaded guilty Friday in connection with her death.
Julie Miller, 51, of Morrisvale, pled guilty to death of a child by a parent by child abuse during a hearing in front of Circuit Court Judge Stacy Nowicki-Eldridge. She was originally charged with murder by a parent, guardian, or custodian by refusal or failure to provide necessities and child neglect resulting in death.

Kanawha County deputies say teen was victim of sextortion before death

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. –The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has released additional information regarding the death of a teenager in Cross Lanes earlier this month.
According to the release, On November 6 around 7:10 p.m., deputies had responded to calls from parents of the victim reporting a shooting on Kelly Road in Cross Lanes. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Bryce Tate, 15, deceased inside the residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tate was a student at Nitro High

Three people injured in Logan County stabbing

LOGAN, W.Va. — Police in Logan County are investigating a stabbing with multiple victims.
Sheriff’s deputies said it happened Friday morning in the Crooked Creek area near Logan.
There were three people injured, two men and a woman. The men are hospitalized in critical condition. The woman refused treatment, authorities said.
State police are assisting in the investigation.

Looking to get right, Appalachian State has no margin for error down the stretch

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Mired in a four-game losing streak, Appalachian State must defeat Marshall on Saturday afternoon to remain in the mix for bowl eligibility and a non-losing season.
While the Herd (5-5, 3-3) needs one win over its last two games to become bowl eligible, there is no margin for error for the Mountaineers (4-6, 1-5) as a result of their recent struggles.
The old rivals face off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from Kidd Brewer Stadium in a game that can be seen on ESPN+.

Governor announces attorney Gerald Titus III to fill Supreme Court vacancy

Gov. Patrick Morrisey has selected Charleston attorney Gerald Titus III to fill a state Supreme Court vacancy.
Titus focuses on corporate litigation, strategic acquisitions, environmental and regulatory issues, commercial trucking and other areas of law at the Spilman Thomas firm.
“I am committed to the rule of law in applying the law as it is written. I believe it’s critical that the court remain impartial and ensure fairness for all parties,” Titus said in his introduction today.
