Milton city worker dies in ditch collapse

MILTON, W.Va. — A Milton city worker died Thursday after being trapped in a ditch.
Authorities said a trench was being dug behind the GoMart on Mason Street when it collapsed at around 11 a.m. trapping the worker.
First responders from Cabell and Putnam counties were on the scene in a rescue attempt. The death was reported a short time later.

No to tadpole purchases and yes to lunch boxes as Hope Scholarship continues to grow

The board overseeing West Virginia’s Hope Scholarship for students outside the public school system had to make decisions today about whether to reimburse families for those purchases that could be used for educational reasons.
Families who opt to use the Hope Scholarship for non-public school expenses receive an amount that changes each year. Most recently, it’s been about $4,900. Families may use the  money for supplies like textbooks, flashcards, whiteboards or

Fitzwater eager to guide Scott in restart of girls soccer program

Caleb Fitzwater has encountered plenty of challenges along the way. That hasn’t lessened his excitement any as Fitzwater prepares to guide the first girls soccer team at Scott High School since 2021.

One dead in wreck which has closed Corridor G in Logan County

LOGAN, W.Va. — Slow travelling today for those passing through Logan County. Sheriff’s Deputies say a collission between a small car and a semi caused a massive mess on U.S. Route 119.and the road remains closed between the Fountain Place Shopping Center exit and Old Logan Road.
According to deputies the car crossed a media curb in that area and hit the semi hauling cinder blocks arond 7:30 a.m. The impact killed the driver of the car. His name has not been released.

West Virginia charter schools board agrees to accept state-approved religious exemptions to vaccination

Officials overseeing West Virginia’s public charter school system plan to advise the schools to accept exemptions to mandatory vaccination policies on religious grounds if they’re approved by state health officials.
That is contrary to the position the state’s traditional public school system has taken but in line with Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s directives.

Train derailment in Terra Alta

TERRA ALTA, W.Va. — Part of a CSX train jumped the tracks in Preston County Thursday morning.
The derailment was reported near Terra Alta.
Preston County Office of Emergency Management Director Duane Hamilton said 13 cars derailed in the Salt Lick Road-Bridge Street area.
“None of them are haz-mat, all of the haz-mat cars are intact,” Hamilton said.
A drone was used to get a closer look at the derailment. There were no injuries, Hamilton said.

Huntington to face trio of defending state champions in 2025
