Cleveland-Cliffs says Weirton project fell apart over partnership, broader financial pressures

Cleveland-Cliffs says it’s abandoning plans for a new electrical distribution transformer production plant in Weirton, part of several cost-cutting moves the steelmaker is undergoing up against millions of dollars in losses across the company.
The move affecting Weirton was announced Wednesday evening. In an earnings call today, company officials elaborated on their reasoning, saying abandonment of the project would result in a capital expenditure reduction of $50 million.

Remains identified as missing Greenbrier County man

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Greenbrier County authorities say a set of human remains discovered last weekend have now been identified as that of a missing man and his death is considered a murder.
Sgt. S. Murphy and Trooper H. Ware of the West Virginia State Police made the grisly discovery in a wooded area near the Nicholas-Greenbrier County border just inside of Greenbrier County last Saturday evening. Wheeling police file charges in separate murder cases

WHEELING, W.Va. — Police in Wheeling have made two arrests in connection with separate murder cases on Wheeling Island.
Police announced Thursday they have charged Dwayne Herring, 53, of Wheeling, with murder in the March 21 death of his wife at a residence on Wheeling Island.
The body of Kathleen Herring, 56, was found inside the residence. Police said there was evidence of a homicide and an autopsy backed up their findings.
Dwayne Herring was arrested last week, April 28, in Albemarle County,

Huntington man sentenced in Ohio school principal attack

IRONTON, OH — A Huntington man convicted on charges of attacking an Ohio elementary school principal was sentenced Thursday to a multi-year prison term.
Joshua Collins
Joshua Collins, 43, was sentenced to up to 45 years behind bars after being convicted on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, felonious assault and having a deadly weapon in a school zone.
Collins attacked and stabbed South Point Elementary School Principal Bill Christian last October inside the school.

Motorcyclists killed in separate wrecks in Jefferson, Kanawha counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two motorcyclists were killed in separate wrecks in West Virginia Wednesday night.
The fatal crashes were in Jefferson and Kanawha counties.
Sheriff’s deputies in Jefferson County said a Maryland man died in a crash on Route 340.

BOLIVAR, W.Va. — An accident Wednesday night on Rt. 340 in Jefferson County claimed the life of a Maryland man.

Wreck involving motorcycle claims life in South Charleston

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A motorcyclist died in a collision on Interstate 64 in South Charleston Wednesday night.
According to South Charleston Police, the motorcyclist and a truck hauling a trailer collided in the eastbound lanes between the MacCorkle Avenue entrance ramp and Montrose Drive at about 8:15 p.m.
The names of those involved have not been released.
An investigation into the crash continues.

Thursday ceremony will honor beloved wrestling coach killed in eastern panhandle storm

RANSON, W.Va. — There will be a celebration of life event Thursday for the man who was killed during Saturday afternoon’s storms in the Eastern Panhandle.
Tyler Sigler
Tyler Sigler, 28, of Charles Town, died on Locust Hill golf course when a tree fell on the golf cart he was in.
Those at the scene attempted life saving measures on Sigler, but he would soon be pronounced dead at Jefferson Medical Center.
The funeral for Sigler will be at 2 o’clock at the Ranson Civic Center.

Morrisey’s executive order on immunization exemptions is wrong on multiple levels

Governor Patrick Morrisey is trying to force the state school system to abide by his executive order expanding exemptions for mandatory school immunizations.  In doing so, he apparently believes that his authority is greater than state law, the will of the Legislature and sound science.
