Appalachian Power inflationary increase takes effect on electric bills across Mountain State

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Appalachian Power customers in the state saw an increase to their bills as the calendar turned to June on Monday.
Appalachian Power announced May 12 that the Public Service Commission (PSC) approved its inflationary increase proposal of $4.84 per 1,000 kilowatts used, effective June 1. The approval was contingent upon Appalachian Power not filing for a base rate increase again until after June 2027.

Buckhannon earns major federal grant for treatment plant construction

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The City of Buckhannon has been awarded nearly $50 million for construction of a new water treatment plant. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has confirmed the city has been awarded $47.31 million in loans and grants for the work.

Teamsters Local 175 reports picketing employee, employee’s mother injured during protests against The Beverage Market

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an alleged incident involving security for The Beverage Market, a picketing employee, and an employee’s mother.

Kanawha County woman pleads guilty to providing boyfriend access to minors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County woman pleaded guilty in court Monday to providing access to children that her boyfriend allegedly sexually abused.
Vanessa Beauvais
Investigators alleged Vanessa Beauvais, 38, ran an in-home daycare in South Charleston and allowed her boyfriend, Christopher Rush, 50, to sexually abuse the kids.
Beauvais pleaded guilty to employment or use of a minor to produce obscene matter.
Beauvais must register as a sex offender for life because of her guilty plea. She’ll

Teen murder suspect arrested in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –– A teenager sought for the murder of another teen in Charleston is in custody. Charleston Police arrested the 15-year old juvenile on a charge of first degree murder.
Police had been looking for the teen with a juvenile pick-up order ever since the May 25th shooting death of a 17-year old on Charleston’s west side. The victim was shot multiple times while sitting in a car on West Washington Street near the Family Dollar store.

Headed toward the end of the fiscal year, year-to-date figures show a surplus of more than $313 million

West Virginia’s state tax revenue was ahead of monthly projections by $44 million, driven largely by strong returns in personal income and consumer sales taxes.
General Revenue collections for May totaled $381,488,880, exceeding the monthly estimate of $336,962,000.
Headed toward the end of the fiscal year, year-to-date figures show a surplus of more than $313 million.
Total year to date general revenue collections are $5,124,126,155.
Overall, the state has collected 96% of its total estimated
