Superintendent focuses on funding based on student enrollment, special education costs

The state superintendent told lawmakers that West Virginia’s school aid formula, which is largely based on student population, deserves examination — as illustrated by the number of consolidations and closures of community schools.
In December, the state school board approved consolidations and closures of more than a dozen schools across six counties. The state also experienced a wave of school consolidations last year.

Kanawha County middle school student caught with handgun on bus

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office is working closely with the St. Albans Police Department after a gun was found on a school bus Wednesday.
A Hayes Middle School student was found with a handgun while riding one of the evening buses. According to a release from the St. Albans Police Department, a Kanawha County Schools employee took possession of the gun and turned it over to school employees.
The student was released to his guardian.

State officials raise questions about contracts, bonuses, auditing in Hancock County financial mess

State education officials have begun an examination of the books in the financially troubled Hancock County school system, with the state superintendent telling legislators that the initial look raised questions about contracts and some employee bonuses that might have exceeded legal authority.

Wayne residents air frustrations as water issues continue

WAYNE, W.Va. — Wayne residents continue to use bottled water to drink, cook and bathe with–as a “Do Not Consume” order remains in place.
The order was first issued last week after oil from an Appalachian Power Company substation leaked into Camp Creek. The substation had been vandalized.

Former Marshall County assessor sentenced following fraud conviction

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — The former elected assessor of Marshall County is sentenced to prison after stealing money through a state purchasing card.
Eric Buzzard (WVRJA)
Eric Buzzard was sentenced Wednesday to 2 to 15 years in prison after an earlier plea to embezzlement and conspiracy charges.
Buzzard was also sentenced to 7 years probation for a guilty plea on a conspiracy charge to commit grand larceny.
Buzzard used a state purchasing card to purchase items for his personal use.

Wayne County car-train crash kills one

CRUM, W.Va. — A man is dead after his car collided with a train in Wayne County.
The accident occurred Wednesday morning in the Crum community off U.S. Route 52.
Wayne County Sheriff Eddie Bradshaw confirmed that a man operating the car was struck by a Norfolk Southern Train.
The name of the victim has not been released.

One child transported after morning bus wreck in Upshur County

FRENCH CREEK, W.Va. — One child was taken to the hospital after a school bus wreck in Upshur County.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies said the bus was travelling State Route 20 near French Creek and the driver hit a patch of black ice during the Thursday morning run. The driver lost control and the bus went up into an embankment. Along with the driver, there were 25 school aged children on the bus at the time of the accident.
