Marshall adds 7-foot-4 center Matthew Van Komen

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall continues adding to its football and men’s basketball rosters.
Thundering Herd basketball coach Cornelius Jackson recently shared that 7-foot-4 center Matthew Van Komen would be playing at Marshall next season.
Van Komen, who hails from Lehi, Utah, has one year of eligibility remaining.
He’s made multiple stops in his college career, starting at the University of Utah before playing for West Coast Conference power St. Marys in the 2020-21 season.

I-79 crash scene now clear, congestion continues

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Interstate 79 northbound near Morgantown remained congested from the Star City exit northbound to the Pennsylvania state line early Tuesday afternoon.
MECCA 911 is reporting a crash involving a semi-truck was reported near the state line at 5 a.m. Initial reports indicate there were no serious injuries, but the crash did include a fuel spill.
Authorities said the crash had been cleared as of noon but congestion was expected to continue into the afternoon because of the miles

Body of New York man found along Interstate 68 near Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies are conducting a death investigation after a body was found Monday off of Interstate 68 near the split with Interstate 79.
The body has been identified as Aaron Monette, 56, of New York. It was discovered on the westbound shoulder of I-68.
The body has been transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Anyone with information about Monette is asked to contact MCSD detectives at (304) 288-5083.

Officials say propane offers strong alternative fuel for Morgantown-based transit system

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountain Line Transit Authority propane testing program is showing increased efficiencies and fewer emissions, according to president and CEO Maria Smith.
Smith said propane was selected because of the high cost to establish an electrical infrastructure to support the buses. Charleston police release names of victims in double fatal crash

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have released the names of the four people involved in a double fatal crash on Mother’s Day morning at the I-77/I-64 split in Charleston.
Police said the crash claimed the lives of driver Tiara Pitts, 29, and passenger Katelyn Berger, 30, both of Charleston.
Two men who were passengers in the minivan, Javon Cousins, 19, of Dunbar, and Fontain Nelson, 29, of Charleston, remain hospitalized in stable condition.

DoHS holds first of several child welfare listening tours in Putnam County

HURRICANE, W.Va. –A few dozen people turned out for the first West Virginia Department of Human Services Child Welfare Listening Session at the Valley Park Conference Center in Hurricane Monday evening.
The listening sessions aim to bring out foster families, case workers, and a range of others on the front line of the childcare crisis in the Mountain State to give the department insight and information.

WV PSC readying for three-day international road check

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The transportation division of the West Virginia Public Service District will be staging a 72-hour period of increased inspections of commercial motor vehicles.
The three-day blitz is part of an annual three nations highway program involving the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The three-day period begins at 12:01a.m. Tuesday and will continue through continue through 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Five-run fourth inning lifts Lincoln over Hampshire, 7-3 in regional opener

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Lincoln pushed five runs across the plate in the fourth inning, all scoring with two outs, to take their opening game in the Class AAA Region II tournament, 7-3 over Hampshire.
