The “Big, Beautiful Bill” Is Not Enough

The one big, beautiful bill is a step in the right direction – but it’s no fix-all.
Consider this. While the bill trims $1 trillion in service costs, its tax cuts drive up deficit projections by nearly $3.8 trillion over the next decade. Translation? Spending was cut, but not enough to cover the revenue losses. The gap remains.
And remember, this budget reconciliation maneuver applies only to mandatory spending. It doesn’t touch discretionary spending, which is governed by the appropriations

Charleston crowd braves bad weather to watch national championship criterium races

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The rain and sub-60-degree temperatures didn’t keep people off the streets of Downtown Charleston Thursday evening during the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championship races.
Thursday was the first day of criterium races, which featured the men’s and women’s junior division and the men’s and women’s under 23 division.
Liam O’Connor, a cyclist on a Denver, Colorado-based team, is set to race on Monday. He says he got ride the course and get a feel for Charleston.

Herbert Hoover returns to familiar territory in the state tournament with 7-1 win over Independence

ELKVIEW, W.Va. — A night after enduring a walk-off loss at Independence, Herbert Hoover scored early and often to secure the Class AAA Region III title with a 7-1 win over the Patriots in the decisive game of the regional.
After a pair of tightly-contested games where each team won by a walk-off on their home field, the Huskies (25-7) scored in five of their six innings at the plate to extend the state’s longest streak of state tournament appearances, which dates back to 2017.

Missouri man arrested in connection to property damage at Kanawha County cemetery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –A Missouri man is in custody after he allegedly abandoned a trailer and caused more than $10,000 in property damage at a cemetery in Kanawha County.

According to a criminal complaint Sean Michael Koppenhoefer, 43, of St. Louis entered into Charleston’s Spring Hill Cemetery Sunday evening while he was driving for Central Expedited Inc.
Koppenhoefer is charged with destruction of property.

New Jefferson Road Bridge open to northbound traffic only

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The Jefferson Road Project in South Charleston continues to make progress as the northbound lane opens up on the newly constructed bridge.
The project aims to improve safety and congestion in the area. It includes the reconfiguration of the road between U.S. Route 119 and U.S. 60, which is from Corridor G to MacCorkle Avenue. It will also include a bridge that stretches over Trace Fork gorge and a roundabout.

USA National cyclists to visit CAMC pediatric patients Friday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Project Echelon, cyclists who are participating in the 2025 USA Cycling Nationals, will be stepping away from the bikes for a little in order to visit pediatric patients Friday.
Cyclists, in partnership with CAMC, will be heading to CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital at 10 a.m. After they meet staff, they’ll make rounds to the Pediatric units and ICU before heading to CAMC Children’s Cancer Center.

Kirn’s complete game lifts Mountaineers to 10-3 win against Cincinnati

Mired in a four-game losing streak and having dropped six of seven contests entering Thursday’s matchup against Cincinnati, top seed West Virginia was in need of a spark.

Transmission line issue impacts Mon Power customers again in Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Monroe counties

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — A continuing problem with a Dominion transmission line caused a significant power outage in Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Monroe counties again Thursday.
The transmission line issue put more than 21,000 Mon Power customers in the three counties without service.
There was a similar outage on May 14.
Mon Power could not give a restoration time when contacted by MetroNews Thursday afternoon.
Appalachian Power customers in the area were not impacted.
