Senators trade words over resolution that could affect eligibility to serve as governor

A senator often aligned with Gov. Patrick Morrisey spoke out today against a proposed resolution to prevent people whose memories don’t all gather round her from running for governor of West Virginia.

Car crash closed U.S. 35 in Mason County Friday

MASON COUNTY, W.Va. –A vehicle crash on U.S. 35 Mason County has shut down lanes in both directions at 16 Mile Road Friday.
According to Mason County Emergency Management officials the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. and multiple vehicles were involved in the crash. They also confirmed that there were injuries involved but no further details were made available.
It’s unclear when the road will be back open.

Jackson County man gets maximum for child abuse death

RIPLEY, W.Va. –– A Jackson County man will spend a long time in prison for the death of a baby.
Jackson County Circuit Judge Lora Dyer on Friday issued the maximum sentence to John Tames, 24 of Ripley. Tames pleaded guilty back in December to second degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.
A three month old baby named Everly, was found in his care in cardiac arrest in Januar of 2024. Police investigating say the child had been abused. She died a few days laterin the hospital and Tames

With Gibson’s second Marshall recruiting class finalized, head coach eager to see who proves worth

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Tony Gibson’s second recruiting class at Marshall features 43 players, most of whom committed during the December signing period or through the transfer portal, which was open for two weeks in January.
Of 43 recruits, 28 are transfers and 15 recently wrapped up their high school careers.
Among the signees, nine players are in the secondary, another nine are offensive linemen and eight are defensive linemen. The Herd also added six wide receivers.

House passes bill crediting consumers in prolonged digital outages

The House of Delegates passed legislation meant  to protect consumers from being charged for essential digital services they did not actually receive.
House Bill 4461 aims to regulate the billing practices of internet and telecommunications companies during prolonged service failures.
The bill passed 92-0 on Friday morning.

Sen. Phillips calls for changes to requirements to run for governor

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A West Virginia state senator wants to change what it takes to run for governor of West Virginia, proposing a Senate resolution to raise the residency requirement from a minimum of five years to 30 years.

Week 4 Power Rankings: Washington, Sherman rise to third in respective classifications

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The MetroNews high school boys basketball poll is voted upon weekly by a panel of 10 radio broadcasters and sports writers across West Virginia. The rankings include total points and first-place votes in parenthesis. Week 4 rankings reflect results up through February 4, 2026.
Rankings will be released each Friday through the completion of regular season.

Baylous named state DHS secretary following retirement from U.S. Marshals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Two days after announcing his retirement as the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of West Virginia, Michael Baylous has a new job, with Gov. Patrick Morrisey naming him as the new Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security.
