The 23rd of June is not a good weather day for W.Va.

 Today, June 23rd, is an anniversary of cruel irony here in West Virginia.  
  A date marked by two of the most significant and devastating weather events in our state’s existence, 72 years apart.

A long night for the coalfields amid rising waters

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. — It’s been a long night across the coalfields. The region of steep hills and deep hollows is dealing with the unthinkable as the National Weather Service reported 4 to 8 inches of rain fell across Mingo, Logan, Boone, and Raleigh Counties.

“When you look at four to eight inches across that region, you know it’s going to cause significant problems,” said MetroNews Meteorologist Brian Hughes who has been monitoring the situation through the night.

NWS issues tornado warning for parts of Marion and Monongalia counties

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a tornado warning Monday evening for parts of southeastern Marion County and southeastern Monongalia County.
The warning was issued at 6:03 p.m.
The NWS noted the strong circulation that indicated on radar a tornado was developing. “A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Fairmont, moving east at 25 mph.”
Several reports from HAM radio operators indicated damage in and around Fairmont.

Mother of Staff Sgt. Wolfe discusses suspect in D.C. attack facing death penalty

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The mother of West Virginia Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe called for forgiveness and consequences when discussing a potential death penalty for the man accused of the D.C. attack.
Last week, the Afghan national accused of killing West Virginia Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and critically injuring Wolfe in November pleaded not guilty to newly filed federal charges.
The new charges mean Rahmanullah Lakanwal could face the death penalty.

Low-income homes in Huntington receiving repairs from students on World Changers mission trip

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A group of 225 students and adults carried the message of the Gospel to the Mountain State — and are helping with home repairs for those who need it.
The faith-based World Changers organization chose Huntington as one of its 19 summer projects this year. World Changers was founded in 1990 to give youth an opportunity to learn about Jesus and serve communities all around the country with mission trips. World Changers has sent mission trips to Huntington since 1998.

Forecaster called 2016 storm system an “over performer”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — National Weather Service Meteorologist Tom Mazza worked the overnight shift at the Charleston Weather Bureau on the night of June 23,2016. He recalled rain in the forecast and some strong showers before he clocked out, but never expected to see what happened as the day moved along.
“It was definitely an over-performer. It was a smaller scale event where everything just came together,” he said.

Over 26,000 West Virginia students have applied for full Hope Scholarship funding

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — More than 26,000 West Virginia students submitted applications for full Hope Scholarship funding for the next school year.
State Treasurer Larry Pack and his office announced the latest application numbers in a release Monday. Pack’s office said 26,617 students applied during the first application period from March 2 to June 15. The estimated cost for Hope Scholarship funding, as it currently stands, is $155 million.
