Charleston officials believe there is “positive momentum” for future of Town Center Mall space

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Matt Sutton, chief of staff for Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin, says the city is having good conversations with the owner of the Town Center Mall property and what the future will hold for the large space.
“We do have some conversations and some positive momentum going as it relates to the future of that property,” Sutton said on “580 Live” on WCHS Radio Tuesday morning.

West Virginia revenue collections just miss monthly estimate; up for the year so far

State revenue was just slightly off for the most recent month.
General revenue collections for August totaled $396,946,723. That fell just below the monthly estimate of $401,932,000 by $4,985,277.
That represents a figure that is 1.7% below what the State of West Virginia took in last August.
General revenue collections for the fiscal year that started on July 1 collections have added up to $785,148,139. For the year so far, that number exceeds the state’s official estimate by $17,285,139.

FestivFALL announces 2025 schedule ahead of annual arts festival’s return

CHARLESTON, W.Va – A growing Charleston tradition returns next month when FestivFALL descends on the city to bring arts, music, dance, and culture to downtown from October 8 to 12.

Poll: West Virginians are critical of public school performance; split on Hope Scholarship

West Virginians have deep concerns about the state of the public school system, according to the most recent edition of the MetroNews West Virginia Poll.
Forty-six percent of respondents in the latest edition of the poll describe themselves as dissatisfied with the public schools.
Just 34% say they are satisfied, and 21% said they are neutral.
Perception depends a great deal on whether respondents had direct, regular contact with schools in their community.

Poll: 71% say yes to supporting school vaccination requirements

Close to three out of four respondents to the most recent edition of the MetroNews West Virginia Poll support requirements for children to be vaccinated.
Seventy-one percent of respondents answered “yes” to the question “Should states require children in grades K-12 to be vaccinated against highly contagious disease before entering school?”
Seventeen percent said “no” and 12% responded “not sure.”

Visitation service to be held for Justice Armstead Tuesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –State Supreme Court Justice Tim Armstead will be remembered Tuesday during a public funeral service in the House of Delegates Chamber.
A visitation service will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for Armstead, 60, who died on August 26 following a battle with cancer. The funeral service will follow at 6 p.m.
Armstead served in the House of Delegates for 20 years, becoming Speaker in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed to the Supreme Court and was re-elected in 2020 to a 12-year term.

So… What was being one of the first WVU students in 1867 really like?

 The WVU football team opened another college football season on Saturday.Thousands of fans made their way into the stadium for the game.
  But did you know that the first ever class of undergrads in WVU history could fit inside a single car? 
  It was on this date, that the West Virginia Agricultural College, renamed West Virginia University a year later, began its first term, on September 2, 1867.  Tuition for that first class was $8 for 13 weeks. Room and board would run you $3.50 per week.
