WVU Board of Governors asks Benson to lay out plans for AAU pursuit

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Last month, West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson announced during his first State of the University address his intention to pursue membership for WVU in the Association of American Universities.

Veterans Day parade returns to Charleston for 84th year on Tuesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va – A moment to recognize those that served the United States in the military comes back to Charleston on Tuesday, with American Legion John Brawley Post 20 holding its 84th annual Veterans Day parade.
The parade begins in downtown Charleston at 11am Tuesday, a date and time that are both meaningful.

Man in custody in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s son

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Police said a Huntington man is in custody after being charged with causing a teenager’s drug death.

Investigators allege Tony Lee Jr. of Huntington sold meth to a 15 year-old boy–who used it and then suffered a heart attack on July 19 that claimed his life.

Crews gain upper hand on Pendleton County forest fire

CHERRY GROVE, W.Va. — Firefighters are starting to get the upper hand on a forest fire in the Monongahela National Forest in Pendleton County which has been burning since last week.
Precipitation helped dampen the forest floor on the Woodside Fire near Cherry Grove and crews were able to increase containment to 75 percent over the weekend. Officials say because of that effort put in by firefighters over the weekend and the expected weather today, there’s a low probability of the fire spreading

Fatal crash in Monongalia County

STAR CITY, W.Va. — One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 79 north near the Star City exit in Monongalia County.
The wreck occurred at around 8 a.m. Monday.
The northbound lanes have been closed. Traffic is backed up for several miles.

Senate vote is first step toward ending longest-ever shutdown

The U.S. Senate has taken the first step toward ending the longest-ever federal shutdown.
The Senate voted 60-40 late Sunday to move forward with a stopgap funding bill to reopen the government through Jan. 30.
Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice, both Republicans of West Virginia, were yes votes.

Charleston firefighters respond to industrial building fire

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Fire crews are using a large ladder truck this morning to battle a fire in an abandoned industrial-type building on Charleston’s West Side.
Flames are shooting through the windows at the corner of Virginia Street and 7th Avenue when fire crews arrived on the scene.
Firefighters said two people were pulled out of windows to safety.
The fire was reported at around 4 a.m.

Marshall defeats Georgia State 3-1 to setup rematch with Mountaineers

Marshall’s regular season match at West Virginia was rather forgetful for the Herd, which suffered a 3-0 loss on Halloween.
MU will have an opportunity to make amends in the near future after it defeated Georgia State 3-1 on Sunday in a Sun Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal.
The match, played at WVU’s home venue of Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, came shortly after West Virginia advanced past Old Dominion.

A court hearing culminates Monday over whether Gov. Patrick Morrisey is operating within his authority to deploy the West Virginia National Guard to patrol Washington, D.C.
