Eight more defendants sentenced in massive Eastern Panhandle fentanyl drug trafficking operation

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. —  Eight more people have been sentenced for their roles in a massive Eastern Panhandle drug trafficking organization.
Acting U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Bernard for the Northern District of West Virginia tells MetroNews an indictment from January of 2024 named Gary Brown, Jr. and eighty-one others, charging that the defendants caused substantial amounts of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine to be distributed in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.

Beckley police name 10 people in arrest warrants following post-commencement fight

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Police have identified 10 people in connection with a big fight that happened outside the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center last Saturday following the Beckley Woodrow Wilson High School commencement ceremony.
Beckley Police Deputy Chief David Allard said the school resource officer did a good job piecing together videos taken of the fight to find out who was involved.

Backpack Buddy program to host 13th annual packing day Saturday

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. –A local program is once again going to be coming together to pack boxes of food for local students who may need assistance during the summer months.
The Backpack Buddies Program, which helps students in Putnam County, Western Kanawha County, and Boone County, will be hosting its 13th Annual Community Packing Day Saturday June 7th at the Teays Valley Nazarene Church in Putnam County.

Philippi man faces attempted murder charges in Moatsville shooting

MOATSVILLE, W.Va. — A Philippi resident is behind bars after shooting an acquaintance in the head and threatening to kill his family.
Deputies from the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office said Christopher Bolyard, 34, shot Justin White, 40, in the head at a residence on White Road in Moatsville at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday.
While deputies responded to the scene, they learned Bolyard threatened to kill the victim’s family.
At the scene, White was found face down on a garage floor with a gunshot

Two men charged in Glenville stabbing

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — State police have charged two men in connection with a fight last month on the Glenville State University campus.
Troopers arrested Tyler Lee Anderson, 22, of Charleston, in the Capital City Wednesday. He’s charged with malicious assault and battery after an investigation into a May 11 fight.
Troopers said Anderson and Devan Gauldin, 22, of Prosperity, got into a fight near Goodwin Hall. Both men went to the ground and Anderson stabbed Gauldin with a knife. Troopers said

Disability Rights West Virginia calls for contract worker reform at state health facilities

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Problems within the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities are a continuing issue for the group Disability Rights West Virginia.

Legal Director Michael Folio applauded changes made within the Department of Human Services but said it is a “tale of two agencies.”

Morrisey takes right steps for child welfare

Governor Patrick Morrisey has promised to lift the veil on West Virginia’s child welfare system. As our Brad McElhinny reported, “The governor said the changes follow a series of listening sessions held across the state with key stakeholders and a thorough review of past child fatalities and near fatalities within the child welfare system.”
Morrisey said that in previous years, the state stonewalled about the status of children in its care, “and that changes now.”

WVSOM officials concerned about future of med students with Big Beautiful Bill

LEWISBURG, W.Va. –The large national reconciliation bill that recently passed the U.S. Representatives is causing concern for the West Virginia Osteopathic School of Medicine.
The bill, which is called the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” would essentially change how much money college students can borrow and how they would pay back their loans by eliminating the Grad PLUS loan program and others.
