Hodge hopeful time off proves beneficial to Mountaineers in matchup at UCF

The team that can better capitalize on a near full week between games figures to put themselves in the best position for success Saturday when West Virginia takes on Central Florida at 6 p.m. inside Addition Financial Arena.
The first of two regular season matchups OVER 21 days between the two squads will air on FS1.
Both teams last played Sunday and lost. WVU suffered a second-straight home defeat against then-No. 13 Texas Tech, 70-63, while UCF was handled at Cincinnati, 92-72.

Man shot to death in Shepherdstown, suspect in custody

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — A man has died following a shooting in Shepherdstown.
Authorities said a call to 911 at 3:30 a.m. Friday said a man was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a University Heights Apartment off Hensel Drive.
The caller said another man had fled the area on foot.
Law enforcement and first responders found 19-year-old Evan Taylor inside the apartment. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses provided the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Shepherd

Legislation to unleash capital for small businesses is in line to be first to pass both chambers

The House of Delegates continued its focus on economic development policies, passing legislation called “The Small Business Growth Act,” which aims to address the funding gap faced by small businesses.
Senate Bill 1 passed the House on an 87-3 vote on Friday. The Senate passed a version of the bill on Feb. 6, but delegates made some changes so the legislation will return to the Senate now to work out the differences.

Randolph County shooting leaves one wounded and two in jail

MONTROSE, W.Va. — A Randolph County man is hospitalized with gunshot wounds and two people are in jail charged with his shooting.
State Police say the incident happened around 9:15 Thursday evening at a home in the Montrose community of Randolph County.
Troopers say Derek Arbogast, 37, of Montrose in an argument is accused of shooting his brother Brett Arbogast, 31, of Elkins. The victim suffered multiple wounds from a .22 caliber revolver. Troopers say after the initial shooting a second

Five sewer and water projects approved for funding in southern W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Abandoned mine land funds will be directed toward improving sewer and water services in McDowell and Mingo Counties in southern West Virginia.
Governor Patrick Morrisey on Friday announced the funds were set aside for the work on critical infrastructure after much of the existing layout was damaged or destroyed in the 2025 flood.

Pilot program aims to give residents more warning about pending floods

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Just days before the anniversary of the most recent major flooding in southern West Virginia, Governor Patrick Morrisey unveiled plans for a pilot project aimed at improving the early warning for impending flood waters.

Seven mining operations in southern West Virginia to close, 530 to be laid off

LOGAN, W.Va. — Greenbrier Minerals LLC has announced plans to idle seven mining operations in southern West Virginia in the months ahead and lay off 530 employees.
The company issued a WARN notice Friday announcing the layoffs which will begin April 14th and will be permanent. Greenbrier Minerals, a subsidiary of Coronado Global Resources, blamed the layoffs on adverse market conditions.
The operations impacted include:

Ohio State faces lawsuit after faculty member attacks journalist interviewing Gee

COLUMBUS, OH. — The attorney for the independent journalist attacked by an Ohio State University faculty member while interviewing former WVU President Gordon Gee wants him to be terminated and criminally charged.
