Career night from Fricks helps Herd move to 3-0 with 96-89 victory against Elon

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — On the first two trips down the court Wednesday night against Elon, Marshall’s 7-foot-4 Matt Van Komen took a lob pass and dunked home two points against his old team and veteran Wyatt Fricks nailed a three-pointer.
It was a sign of things to come for a pair of Herd starters in a contest with the Phoenix at Cam Henderson Center. Especially Fricks, who would experience a long-awaited career night with 34 points, nine rebounds and four assists to key Marshall

West Virginia Congress members celebrate vote to end government shutdown

WASHIINGTON, D.C. — The United States House of Representatives has voted to re-open the government after the longest shutdown in the nation’s history.
The House voted 222-209 on a funding package Wednesday night, which would re-open the government. The bill passed through the Senate on Monday.
Rep. Riley Moore (WV-2), who voted yes Wednesday, says the last month and a half was avoidable.
“It was a pathetic political stunt that came at the expense of the livelihoods of Americans,” Moore wrote on

Private foundation gift to ease food insecurity in Tucker County

PARSONS, W.Va. — A private foundation gift in Tucker County is expected to ease food insecurity issues.
A gift of $50,000 from the Augusta Family Foundation, announced Tuesday, will be split between the Tucker County Family Resource Network (FRN) and the Blackwater Ministerial Association.

Ross Hodge awaits his first Backyard Brawl Thursday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Hours before he was introduced as the new WVU men’s basketball head coach on April 3, Ross Hodge got his first taste of the West Virginia-Pittsburgh rivalry. Shortly after arriving in Morgantown the morning before his first press conference, Hodge stopped by Kendrick Family Ballpark to see the Mountaineers and the Panthers meet on the diamond.
Seven months later, Hodge will lead his Mountaineers onto the court at Hope Coliseum in the 192nd edition of the Backyard Brawl.

Dillingham: Mountaineers’ dedication to ground game will challenge stout ASU run defense

Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham heaped praise on West Virginia’s run defense, specifically citing the efforts over the last three games, in which the Mountaineers have allowed a total of 229 yards on the ground.

Fire destroys Brooke County landmark

WELLSBURG, W.Va. — A Brooke County landmark has been destroyed by fire.

Flames moved through the Aspen Manor Mansion in Wellsburg Tuesday night.
State Senator Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, said 40 fire crews with a number of tanker trucks responded to the blaze. He spoke with the Wellsburg fire chief.
“He said by the time he got up there it was gone before they got started,” Weld said on MetroNews Midday. “The mansion was already engulfed in flames.”
