Organizers expect north of 2,000 for the annual Tour de Coal

TORNADO, W.Va. — When Bill Currey sits on the porch of the Coal River Group’s headquarters at Meadowood Park, he can scarcely believe what he and three good friends created. This Saturday will be the organization’s 24th float trip known as the Tour De Coal. It’s expected more than 2,000 kayaks and canoes will be on the water of the Coal River Saturday for the event. It’s a sizeable upgrade from the 44 boats which made the first one in 2001.

Arrest made in Morgan County armed robbery

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Berkeley County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man this week wanted in an armed robbery in Morgan County.
BCSD Chief Deputy of Staff Eric Burnett tells The Panhandle News Network a man and woman had been robbed of $1,900 and a cell phone after the suspect, identified as Daniel Speilman, 19, of Hedgesville, allegedly brandished a firearm.

Veteran Hurricane boys basketball coach Lance Sutherland steps down

HURRICANE, W.Va. — Putnam County School officials have started the process in search of a new boys basketball coach at Hurricane High.
Lance Sutherland, who led the Redskins for 15 seasons, submitted his resignation from the job earlier this week.
Sutherland issued a statement through social media thanking Hurricane fans. It read:
“Thank you Redskin Nation for everything you have done to support the basketball program during my time at Hurricane High School,” Sutherland said.

Tentative deal in place over Verizon planned acquisition of Frontier in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It appears there is a settlement agreement in place over the plan by Verizon to buy out Frontier Communications service in West Virginia. The two companies appeared before the state Public Service Commission Thursday morning to begin two days of evidentiary proceedings in the case. However, just as the event was getting started the parties asked for a recess because they believed they had reached a tentative settlement.

Class AAAA all-state softball list

Captains usually avoid severe weather, but Audrea Watts pitches up a storm.
Watts, the ace pitcher on Cabell Midland’s 2025 state championship squad, is the captain of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association Class AAAA all-state high school softball team.
The junior righthander went 22-1 with a 0.86 earned run average and five no-hitters. In 138 2/3 innings, she held foes to 58 hits, struck out 278 and walked 41. She beat St. Albans, University and Jefferson

Our immigration fail

It is looking more and more like it will be a long, hot summer in America.
President Trump’s immigration crackdown triggered protests in California last weekend that have now spread across the country. Many of the protests are peaceful, but some are violent, destructive and unlawful. Police have arrested dozens of individuals.
Trump has responded by sending in the National Guard and even the Marines in Los Angeles, a move that has been criticized by Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom.

Marshall University President Brad D. Smith awarded contract extension

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall University Board of Governors unanimously approved a contract extension for President Brad D. Smith Wednesday.
Marshall University President Brad Smith
The extension will keep Smith in Huntington through at least the end of 2029.
Smith, the 1986 Marshall graduate, began serving as the university’s president in 2022. Since then, Marshall has seen consistent growth in enrollment numbers and the beginning of multiple successful programs.

Motorcyclist dead in Braxton County crash

SUTTON, W.Va. — West Virginia State Police has confirmed that one person is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle Tuesday afternoon.
According to a release, Jeffrey Robertson, 62, of Elkview, WV, died at around 1:20 p.m. after crashing into a passenger vehicle on Route 15 near the Gerald R. Freeman Campground.
Robertson was traveling west when he crossed the centerline and struck the oncoming vehicle head-on. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

New “dip” signs added on I-64 in Nitro

NITRO, W.Va. — Motorists who travel east on Interstate 64 near Nitro have been getting acquainted with a set of dips on the Nitro-St. Albans bridge.
The dips were noticed by drivers shortly after the state Division of Highways finished their bridge widening project. The project, which spanned from the Scott Depot and Nitro exits, was the largest under the Roads to Prosperity program.
