Morrisey, Interior secretary sign agreement expanding West Virginia’s authority over coal mining on federal lands

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Governor Patrick Morrisey joined Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum Wednesday to formalize an amendment to the State-Federal Cooperative Agreement between the mountain state and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
According to a news release, the amendment expands West Virginia’s authority to regulate coal mining and reclamation activities on federal lands within its borders.

Public Safety Alert issued in Huntington following seizure of fentanyl laced tablets

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –Huntington Police Department has issued a public safety alert after fentanyl-laced tablets were found shaped as cartoon characters.
A release from HPD said there was more than 900-multi-colored tables seized. The pills were molded to resemble an emblem from the Transformers series and were about the size of a child’s vitamin.
Field tests showed that the pills contained fentanyl and MDMA, or ecstasy or molly, which is a highly potent and potentially lethal synthetic opioid.

Two Huntington men arrested in joint operation; drugs, firearms seized

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –Two Huntington men were arrested following a joint operation to bring one of the individuals into police custody.

According to a release from the Huntington Police Department, Devon Maurice Carey, 31, and Samuel Lamont Hawkins Jr., 31, were arrested Tuesday by members of the U.S. Marshals Service CUFFED Task Force, Huntington Police, SWAT Team, and Huntington Violent Crime Drug Task Force.

Huntington officials investigating cybersecurity incident

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –City of Huntington officials say they detected and responded to a cybersecurity incident Tuesday night.
According to a release, they said their monitoring systems had identified suspicious activity quickly and was able to immediately activate their response protocols.
The release said officials have been in contact with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and are working to investigate, contain, and remediate the situation.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Board members at West Virginia International Yeager Airport were joined Wednesday by U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice to announce $25 million in congressionally directed spending for terminal modernization and passenger improvements.

Legislation for greater regulation of crypto kiosks advances in state Senate

A Senate committee quickly advanced a bill meant to make sure people aren’t being scammed at bitcoin kiosks.
SB 887 is intended to better regulate the kinds of kiosks often found in convenience stores and gas stations allowing users to buy or sell cryptocurrencies using cash or debit cards is on track to be introduced in the Legislature this week. Those kiosks often have fees ranging from 5% to 15% per transaction.

WVSSAC approves girls wrestling for 2026-27 season

VIENNA, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Board of Directors voted on Tuesday night to approve girls wrestling as a preliminary sanctioned sport beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
The decision establishes an official WVSSAC girls wrestling state championship supported by a regional qualifying format. The girls-only championship will be conducted separately from the boys state wrestling tournament.

Oklahoma State brings Big 12’s top scoring offense to Morgantown Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Hopes for a Big 12 regular season championship dimmed for the WVU women’s basketball team with Sunday’s 59-50 loss at TCU. Entering Wednesday’s play, the Mountaineers (11-4 Big 12) trail by TCU and Baylor by a half game with three games left to play. West Virginia will host Oklahoma State (21-7, 10-5 Big 12) Saturday.

DNR Director calls new meeting format a success

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — DNR Director Brett McMillion told state lawmakers the new format for the Natural Resources Commission meetings had been a rousing success.
Last year, the DNR changed the Commission meeting format from a location somewhere in West Virginia on a Sunday afternoon, to a live-streamed meeting from six locations across the state simultaneously where people can attend and participate.
