Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Softball Tournament returns this Saturday

CHAPMANVILLE. W.Va – The Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Softball Tournament returns this Saturday as Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College honors the state trooper who was killed in the line of duty in 2023.
This year marks the third tournament put on to raise funds and awareness for the Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship, which benefits first responders and their families who choose to pursue a degree or certification program at the college.

Man wanted in 2020 Kanawha County robbery, fleeing case arrested in Chicago

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies say a man who has been on the run for five years is now in custody.

“After five years on the run, justice caught up. Timothy Lee Walding Jr. of St. Albans has been arrested in Chicago and brought back to West Virginia to face his charges in Kanawha County,” a Thursday Facebook post from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said.
Walding, 46, is charged with first-degree robbery and fleeing.

Fairmont man indicted after Wheeling Island death

WHEELING, W.Va. — A Fairmont man has been indicted for multiple charges following an assault that turned deadly on Wheeling Island two years ago.

Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney Shawn Turak announced the indictment of Dennis Terrell Evans, 37, on one count of murder, one count of first-degree robbery and one count of first-degree sexual assault.
Police found 49-year-old Christine Lynn King unconscious and partially clothed in a yard on Fink Street on Wheeling Island in July 2023.

Charges against former NFL veteran, Kanawha County native Chris Massey dropped after altercation with Putnam County deputy

WINFIELD, W.Va. — The four misdemeanor charges against former Marshall University and NFL veteran Chris Massey have been dropped.
In August, a criminal complaint stated Massey was charged with battery, disorderly conduct, trespassing and obstruction after an alleged altercation with Putnam County Deputy Seth Lewis, who also served as the coach for Massey’s son at Winfield Middle School.

West Virginia political leaders react following the assassination of Charlie Kirk

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Members of West Virginia’s congressional delegation and Gov. Patrick Morrisey have all responded on social media to the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on the campus of Utah Valley University Wednesday.
Kirk, 31, was assassinated just a few minutes after he began an outdoor rally before approximately 3,000 students and others. Police said the shot came from the roof of a campus building. It was a targeted killing, police said.

West Virginia Wesleyan announces new physician assistant program at Battler’s Knob

PHILIPPI, W.Va. –A new physician assistant program is coming to Battler’s Knob, marking the first program of its kind in Philippi since Alderson Broaddus University closed its doors in 2023.
