Two counties now under state of emergency following flash flooding; 5 people dead in Ohio County

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency in a second West lVirginia county due to flooding when he made a designation for Marion County Sunday evening.
Morrisey, who declared a state of emergency earlier Sunday in Ohio County, said state resources were being moved into place.

DOH faces challenges after 4 inches of rain fell in 30 minutes in Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. — State Division of Highways crews from several areas of the state are in Wheeling after Saturday night’s flooding that damaged roads and bridges along the creeks that empty into the Ohio River.

BridgeValley President gives update on U.S. Department of Education consulting role

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — President of BridgeValley Community and Technical College Dr. Casey Sacks says her temporary consultant job for the U.S. Department of Education is going well so far.
After taking the six month consulting job for the U.S. Department of Education back in May, Sacks said during her most recent appearance on 580 Live that she is currently making the trip to Washington D.C. about two weeks a month to assist federal representatives with various workforce-related projects.

Homer Hickam’s The Coalwood Way set to become a film

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –West Virginia natives author Homer Hickam and actor/producer Kevin Sizemore are teaming up together to bring what they call an “equal not a sequel ” to the 1999 movie October Sky.
The pair, who were on MetroNews Midday last week, said they are hoping to bring to life Hickam’s book The Coalwood Way, in which he released in 2000. The new film is expected to be called December Sky.

Ohio County communities hit with devastating flash flooding overnight

WHEELING, W.Va. — At least three people are dead in Ohio County on Father’s Day as torrential rain led to severe flash flooding.
Roads are currently closed and homes have been destroyed in Wheeling and surrounding communities.

Father’s Day flood watch in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Meteorologists with the National Weather Service have put most of West Virginia under a flood watch beginning at noon on Father’s Day.
The flood watch covers most of the state. (NWS image)

PSC orders Waste Management to do a better job

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission has ordered garbage pick-up utility Waste Management to do a better job.
In a 9-page order filed Friday, the PSC said, among things, Waste Management must set up a 1-800 call-in system where customers with problems can talk with a real person, The PSC also addressed credits for pick-ups that are missed by the company.

Skaff visitation set for Monday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A visitation service for former state lawmaker and Charleston businessman Doug Skaff is set for Monday in Charleston.

Those who knew Skaff will gather at the state Culture Center from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A prayer service is set for 7:30 p.m.
Skaff, 48, died Tuesday in a vehicle crash on Interstate 79 in Lewis County.
