Entire Barrackville Police Department relieved of duties

BARRACKVILLE, W.Va. — In a post on social media the town of Barrackville has announced the entire police department has been relieved of duty.
The action was taken by the mayor and city council, according to the statement.

Fire isn’t out, but none is visible today on warehouse site in Wood County

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Fire crews report progress on battling the blaze at the People’s Cartage Warehouse in Wood County.
According to Incident Commander Ron Utt, Chief of the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department, there is no visible fire left on the site today. However, thermal imaging showed hot spots which need to be uncovered and doused.
“We’re currently separating the steel from the product,” said Utt.

DOH awards contract for second roundabout in Kanawha County

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — There’s another traffic roundabout coming to Kanawha County.
The state Division of Highways has hired a contractor to construct a roundabout at the intersection of the I-64 Institute exit and state Route 25 in Institute.
West Virginia Paving will be paid $5.4 million to do the job.
DOH Engineer Dirar Ahmad said a roundabout that location will improve safety and reduce the potential for severe angle crashes.

Kanawha County Schools originally long RIF and transfer lists drastically reduced as attrition opens up positions

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The number of Kanawha County School workers who will actually lose their jobs from last school to this school year has been drastically reduced.

Natural attrition including resignations and retirements has opened up jobs for those originally on the RIF (Reduction In Force) list. The list was long this year because the county school system continues to lose student enrollment.

11 Marshall student athletes suing NCAA over new rule

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Eleven players in various Marshall University sports are suing the NCAA over its new eligibility rule.
The student athletes are seeking an injunction in Cabell County Circuit Court over the new five years to play five seasons rule approved last month.
The lawsuit was first reported by the West Virginia Record.
The players say the new rule cuts them off because they graduated high school in 2022 and played four seasons and are now being denied a fifth season.

Attorney General’s Office plans to ask U.S. Supreme Court to review longstanding foster care case

Attorneys for the State of West Virginia are asking a federal district judge to pause consideration of a big lawsuit over foster care while they pursue a review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Last year, U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin dismissed a class action lawsuit about conditions in West Virginia’s foster care system, concluding the federal court system does not have the jurisdiction to set the kind of detailed policies that are properly carried out by the other branches of government.
