Missing elderly man rescued from neck-high water in Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. — An elderly man in Elkins was saved by authorities just in time Wednesday night.
According to the Elkins Police Department, Harold Wayne Simmons, 80, was reported missing from his home on Gorman Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
State Police received a trespassing call just before 10:30 Wednesday night for a wooded area near Fern Hill Lane. When officers arrived on scene, they heard Simmons call out and found him partially submerged in a creek off a 20-foot embankment. Simmons was

Ohio County officials name woman missing from weekend floods, detail extensive county-wide damage

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — The Wheeling-Ohio County Emergency Management Agency has identified a potential ninth victim of the weekend flooding in Ohio County.
Sandra Kay Parsons, 83, of Triadelphia, has been missing since Saturday. Five of the eight confirmed dead were from Triadelphia.
Anyone with information about Parsons is urged to call 911.
The afternoon update also shows that more than two dozen homes in Ohio County were destroyed in the floodwaters, and north of 120 sustained damage.

Trial date set for next spring over changes at NIOSH

A federal judge has set a May 24, 2026, trial date over whether the federal government is properly carrying out black lung screening through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The trial date was set in a broader scheduling order filed by U.S. District Judge Irene Berger in Charleston. It is possible the participants in the lawsuit could resolve their differences before then. It is also possible for a trial to be bumped to a later date.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Several state lawmakers say it’s past time to make Juneteenth an official state holiday.

Berkeley County deputies make arrests in series of thefts at retail stores

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Police in Berkeley County arrested two of four people they say had been part of a retail theft ring that stole from stores over a 48-hour period in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
That spree came to a halt for two of them in Martinsburg Wednesday night when Berkeley County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Target in the Retail Commons.
