Governor proposes 10% tax cut and average public employee pay raise of 3%

Gov. Patrick Morrisey proposed income tax cuts of 10% and pay raises for public employees averaging 3 percent.
Those were some of the bottom lines of the governor’s State of the State address to kick off the annual West Virginia legislative session.

No jail time for man once charged with gang related murder in Marion County

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — One-time alleged Pagans Motorcycle Club leader Ryan Lane will receive no jail time after pleading guilty to a charge of “organized criminal enterprise” as part of the 2022 Marion County murder case of Henry Silver.

Lane was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine along with court costs as part of a ruling by Marion County Circuit Judge Patrick Wilson on Wednesday, less than three months after agreeing to a plea deal for the single felony

Grafton woman charged in death of malnourished stepdaughter

GRAFTON, W.Va. — A Taylor County woman is in custody for allegedly allowing her stepdaughter to be malnourished to the point of death.
Taylor County Sheriff Randy Durrett said Shannon Robinson, 51, of Graton, was arrested Wednesday morning after an almost year-long investigation into the death of an 11-year-old girl who weighed just 43 pounds.

Kanawha health director calls flu strain “a real butt kicker”

CHARELSTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County’s Chief Health Officer said this year’s strain of the flu has turned out to be worse than expected.
“It has been a real butt-kicker as some of the patients have told me. I’m talking some really young, healthy men are telling me they hurt all over and can’t even go to work,” said Dr. Steven Eshenaur.

Session begins, lawmakers reminded of the state’s economic challenges

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state legislature began its 60-day regular session with little fanfare Wednesday with the House and Senate gaveling ar around noon.

Cold weather coming

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the higher elevations of West Virginia for the next 24 hours. The advisory is for parts of Pocahontas, Randolph, and Webster Counties from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 1 p.m. Thursday.

NIOSH Employees reinstated after protracted fight

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — NIOSH jobs have been reinstated.
The federal workers union, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 3840, announced the development late Wednesday morning.
NIOSH has a large facility in Morgantown where several thousand workers lost their jobs through DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) moves not long after President Donald Trump took office last year.

Hardesty calls for changes to school aid formula as legislative session begins

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – With the 2026 regular legislative session underway, West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Paul Hardesty wants lawmakers to do something about the state’s school aid formula.
