Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate fatal crash on Coalfields Expressway

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office has released an update on the ongoing investigation into a fatal traffic crash that occurred earlier this year on West Virginia Route 121, also known as the Coalfields Expressway.
The crash, which took place on April 20, 2025, involved Baylea Bower.

One person dead following vehicle crash on I-79 in West Virginia

ELKVIEW, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A single-vehicle crash early Monday morning on Interstate 79 has left one person dead, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred near the 7-mile marker on I-79 and was reported to Metro 911 around 5:23 a.m. Deputies arrived to find a Dodge pickup truck overturned in the median.

Federal government to end paper checks for Social Security and other benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) – Starting September 30, the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments, including Social Security benefits.

Golden Corral in Beckley suspends free meal offer for preachers after complaint

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Golden Corral in Beckley has suspended a promotional event offering free meals to preachers after receiving a formal complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a national nonprofit based in Wisconsin that advocates for the separation of church and state.
Since March 2025, Eddie Torrico, owner of the Golden Corral located at 1320 N. Eisenhower Drive in Beckley, had been offering free Sunday meals to “preachers of all denominations.”

WV Nursery & Landscape Association Offering $5K Scholarships to Horticulture Students

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association (WVNLA) Marcus W. Rennix Memorial Scholarship program is accepting applications for Mountain State students studying horticulture, landscape architecture, and nursery and greenhouse management. The deadline for applications to be submitted is September 30, 2025.
