Amie Louise Lewis

Amie Louise Lewis, 51, of Martinsburg, passed away early Monday morning, Oct. 6, at Mon General Hospital. She was born March 1, 1974, a daughter of the late Sharon Syrian Lewis and Michael Lewis.
She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School with the class of 1992 and attended Marshall University and WVU. Amie served as a correctional officer for 18 years in Juvenile Services. She worked her way up the rankings, and most recently served as a Lieutenant, the highest of the ranking order. Prior to

Government shutdown grinds into week two

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tours at the Capitol have come to a standstill. The House is keeping its doors closed, while the Senate repeated its loop Wednesday of failed votes to reopen the government. President Donald Trump is threatening to mass fire federal workers and refuse back pay for the rest.

3 West Virginians confirmed by U.S. Senate

CHARLESTON — Three West Virginians, including one current state senator and one former lawmaker, will take positions in the federal government months after the nominations by President Donald Trump as the federal government remains shut down.

Randolph BOE votes to close Harman, North schools

ELKINS – The Randolph County Board of Education voted Wednesday night to close the Harman K-12 school and North Elementary School.
At the end of a three-hour-plus hearing, the BOE voted 4-1 to close Harman, and 5-0 to close North. BOE member Ed Daniels cast the sole vote against closing Harman.
Many residents spoke during the hearing in favor of keeping the schools open. The BOE voted at 9 p.m., and the hearing ended immediately afterward.

Elkins man arrested, sued over contracting disputes

ELKINS – A Randolph County man was arrested by Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputies this week and is facing a lawsuit from the State Attorney General’s Office after allegedly committing fraudulent schemes.
Charles Blaine Simmons, 53, of Elkins, has been charged with four separate counts of fraudulent schemes in Randolph County. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $7,500 cash-only bond set by Magistrate Mike Dyer.

Frost advisory, freeze watch in place for region

ELKINS – Randolph, Pocahontas, Barbour, Upshur and Tucker counties are under a frost advisory and a freeze watch for Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sad Process

Today marks the beginning of a sad process for the Randolph County Schools system, as the county Board of Education will vote this month on whether to close two K-12 schools and three elementary schools.

TV golf team qualifies for states tourney

DAVIS — Tygarts Valley punched its ticket to the state golf tournament by capturing the Class A, Region II tourney Monday at Canaan Valley Resort Golf Club.
The Bulldogs finished with a 264 to best runner-up Pendleton County, which also earned a state spot, by six strokes.
Tucker County (272), East Hardy (310), Pocahontas County (310) and Union (396) rounded out the field.
Owen Bell carded an 83 to lead Tygarts Valley, followed by Mason Phillips (90), Parker Bell (91) and Alijah Row-Sponaugle

ELKINS — Davis & Elkins College Assistant Professor of Theatre and Film Lonnie Martin, along with cast members Sidney Apanowicz, Trinity Fleming, Marissa Mallow and Nicole Schumacher, visited with the Rotary Club of Elkins, giving the group a preview of D&E’s upcoming production of “Lizzie: The Musical.” The four-character ensemble performed the play’s opening number, “The House of Borden.”
