Goldie Jean Thrasher Evans, 84, a lifelong resident of Tucker County, West Virginia, and more recently a resident of Cumberland, Maryland, departed this life early Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center in Cumberland, Maryland. She had been in declining health.
She was born Monday, June 2, 1941, at Cumberland, Maryland, a daughter of the late Wilber “Webb” Thrasher and Mildred Marie Auvil Thrasher.

2 charged with animal cruelty

BELINGTON — Two Barbour County residents were arrested on Monday after three dogs on their property were found not receiving adequate care, officials.
Kamie Moats, 43, and Garry Hinchman, 48, were charged with three counts each of cruelty to animals. Both are currently lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, according to the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office.

Broadband funding set for 10 county projects

CHARLESTON — Several broadband expansion projects spanning 10 counties in West Virginia will receive an infusion of federal funding.
In a press release Thursday, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that more than $34 million in funding through the $1.9 trillion federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) would be awarded to five internet service providers for projects across the state.

Elkins woman arrested in Maryland

CUMBERLAND, Md. – An Elkins woman was arrested by police in Maryland Saturday and was reportedly in possession of a “large quantity” of methamphetamine, officials said.
Kelly Jean Channell, 53, was charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances, possession of a large amount of CDS, four counts of possession of CDS (not cannabis), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Demolition of Four Seasons motel delayed

ELKINS — The City of Elkins could begin to advertise the demolition bid for the former Four Seasons Motel next week after receiving a passing grade on an asbestos inspection on Monday, city officials said.
The property, which the city purchased on May 8, was to undergo pest control, asbestos testing and eventual “complete demolition” in six weeks, according to a City of Elkins statement on May 15, more than five weeks ago.

Lucille J. Mallow, 79, of Bartow, West Virginia, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Arbovale, with Pastor Julian Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Arbovale Cemetery Annex.
