Ideologues can’t always get what they want

MAGA has a problem, in the form of Donald Trump. Put simply: MAGA wants to define what MAGA (or “America first”) means, and Donald Trump wants it to mean whatever he says at any given moment.
Make America Great Again means different things to different people. The Trump coalition is not monolithic, it contains factions that do not necessarily consider themselves to be MAGA. But as shorthand, MAGA is an identifiably distinct bloc on the right, and it’s the dominant faction in the broader GOP

WVU prepares students for job market

MORGANTOWN — Most college students would tell you they’re scared to think about their next steps. Not West Virginia University business students.
In June 2025, the post-graduation job placement rate for students in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics reached 78.1% — an all-time high — following 10 consecutive years of growth.
“This is indicative of just how well our students are performing in the classroom, during their internships, and ultimately during the interview process,”

Dozens of countries with no deals face higher tariffs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Numerous countries around the world are facing the prospect of much higher duties on their exports to the United States on Friday, a potential blow to the global economy, because they haven’t yet reached a trade deal with the Trump administration.
Some of the United States’ biggest trading partners have reached agreements, or at least the outlines of one, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Even so, those countries face much higher tariffs than were in

Back on the Field

MORGANTOWN — It was mid-80s, a little humid and partly cloudy, but a great day for the first day of fall camp for West Virginia.
Rich Rodriguez went out for his first practice of the 2025 season as the 36th coach of West Virginia. But it wasn’t his first preseason practice for the Mountaineers. This is actually his eighth preseason camp at WVU, not counting the ones he attended as an assistant or player. Rodriguez hadn’t quite had one like this.
Rodriguez went out to practice in khaki shorts, a

Hints From Heloise

Read up on the U.S. government
Dear Heloise: Government and politics aren’t the same thing. All the “bickering” you hear and read is people spewing political opinions, some of which aren’t based on any understanding of the Constitution. It’s fairly easy these days to learn about the structure of the United States government and the reasoning behind the form it takes under the Constitution.
I’d advise reading it and paying attention to the amendments. If you really are interested, you can read

Tortured by bureaucrats

Americans like licenses. People think they make us safer.
We license drivers.
We license dogs.
But most government licensing is useless. Or harmful.
It limits competition, raises costs, leaves consumers with fewer choices and blocks opportunity for people who want to work.
Michelle Freenor, a tour guide in Savannah, Georgia, gets good reviews from customers.
But her business almost didn’t get off the ground because local politicians said, “No one can be a tour guide without first getting a
