G7 leaders want to contain the Israel-Iran conflict

KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — World leaders at the Group of Seven summit in Canada scrambled Monday to find a way to contain the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, with U.S. President Donald Trump warning that Tehran needs to curb its nuclear program before it’s “too late.”
The U.S. president said Iranian leaders would “like to talk” but they had already had 60 days to reach an agreement on their nuclear ambitions and failed to do so before an Israeli aerial assault began four days ago.

Trump family to launch mobile phone company

NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump family is licensing its name to a new mobile phone service, the latest in a string of ventures announced while Donald Trump is in the White House despite ethical concerns that the U.S. president could mold public policy for personal gain.
Eric Trump, the president’s son running The Trump Organization in his absence, announced a new venture Monday called Trump Mobile. The plan is to sell phones that will be built in the U.S., and the phone service will maintain a call

ELKINS — Elkins City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would incorporate a “de minimis” exemption for certain small businesses and independent contractors, a change now required by state law with West Virginia House Bill (HB) 2451.
The nine members of council in attendance approved the first reading of Ordinance 344 during the June 12 meeting. Ordinance 344, in compliance with HB 2451, will amend §110.055 of the Elkins City Code to allow certain exemptions for

At least 5 dead after Ohio County flood

WHEELING — As of Sunday evening, state and local officials reported five people confirmed dead as a result of powerful rains and flooding on Saturday with at least four others believed missing.
Flood waters came quickly Saturday night, stranding some cars and sending others careening down creeks. They pulled homes from their foundations and destroyed them. Massive pieces of debris — cars, large metal storage containers, refrigerators and more – crashed into bridges, forcing their closure until

A requiem for Doug Skaff

I really wasn’t expecting to have to write, in essence, an obituary for former lawmaker and politician Doug Skaff last Tuesday.
The accident that killed him remains under investigation, but by all reports it was a freak accident on I-79 near Weston. Skaff’s SUV went into the back of a semi-truck and despite trying to brake in time, it was too late.
Skaff was only five years older than me at 48. I had known him since his first stint in the House of Delegates in what was once the largest of the

Furniture, family and boundaries

Dear Annie: My husband and I recently agreed to sell our old lounge furniture, since we’re in the process of buying a new set. We made the decision together, so I assumed we’d also agree on who it would be sold to.
He later called to say he found a buyer, which I was happy to hear — until he added a twist. The buyer would be paying in monthly installments. When I asked if the person was reliable, he dropped the bomb: “It’s my daughter.”
He went on to explain that he noticed the lounge set at his

Common Sense

West Virginia’s Prosecuting Attorneys Association injected a little common sense and decency into a conversation that reached intrusive absurdity after Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Truman earlier this month made the chilling claim that women could face potential criminal charges if they do not inform law enforcement of miscarriages.
“Call your doctor. Call law enforcement, or 911, and just say, ‘I miscarried. I want you to know,’” Truman said to WVNS-TV in a June 2 interview.

Task Force drug, arrest statistics listed

ELKINS — The Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force seized drugs valued at more than $400,000 and made more than 70 felony arrests in 2024, officials said.
Elkins City Police Chief Travis Bennett gave a report of the task force’s 2024 statistics to Elkins City Council during their most recent meeting.
“I think it’s very important for you to know what that task force produces,” Bennett told council Thursday night. “Because we have a large commitment in that, having a full-time officer

Winfield’s Carroll named state’s softball POY

CHARLESTON — Winfield softball pitcher Mattie Carroll is a winner — again.
After capping her junior season by leading the Generals to their third consecutive state championship, Carroll was named by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association as the Player of the Year on Friday.
Carroll was a second-team all-state selection last season after leading Winfield to the Class AA state championship, but a dominant performance in the state tournament this season – the Generals’ first as a Class AAA
