Third victim dies after ice rink attack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A deadly shooting during a youth hockey game in Rhode Island last week has claimed a third victim, a grandfather whose daughter and grandson were also killed in the attack, authorities said.
Gerald Dorgan, who had been in critical condition, has died from his injuries, Pawtucket police said.
Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said he was heartbroken that another person has died because of the shooting.

D&E bus wrecks in ice and snow

A Davis & Elkins College bus involved in a single-vehicle accident took up both lanes of traffic on Harpertown Road in Randolph County this afternoon. Randolph County EMS, the Elkins Fire Department and the Elkins City Police Department responded to the scene. No one appeared to be injured in the accident.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby placed on IR

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to start their playoff push without Sidney Crosby.
The club placed its longtime captain on injured reserve on Wednesday. The move comes after Crosby sustained a lower-body injury during the Olympic hockey tournament at the Milan Cortina Games.

Late scoring burst lifts WVU women by UCF

MORGANTOWN — The scoring burst came later than expected, but it eventually happened. The end result was the 17th-ranked WVU women’s basketball team walked out of Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Fla. on Wednesday with one collective “whew.”
Behind a dominating third-quarter performance that saw the Mountaineers shoot nearly 77% from the field, WVU avoided what would have been a major upset with a 74-62 victory against struggling UCF.

Anna Mae Bender Shoulders

Mrs. Anna Mae Bender Shoulders, 85, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday afternoon Feb. 23, 2026, in WV Caring Hospice Facility at Elkins. Death was following a period of declining health.
She was born Aug. 9, 1940, in Elkins, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Richard and Flora Irene Wyatt Bender.
On Aug. 17, 1961, she was united in marriage to Gennis Junior “Buck” Shoulders, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 2012.
She is survived by four children, Ricky Shoulders and wife,

Skenes loses 4 strikes to challenges in Cy Young winner’s spring debut

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes lost four strikes to challenges in his first spring training start.
Skenes struck out four and walked four over 2 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh on Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves, who were 4 for 4 against the right-hander on challenges to get called strikes overturned to balls — one of them by the slimmest of margins.
The 53-pitch outing is expected to be the only one Skenes has for Pittsburgh before he joins the U.S.

Elwanda Jean (Haddix) Long

Elwanda Jean Haddix Long, 90, of Gaines, West Virginia, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, at home with her loved ones surrounding her.
She was born June 18, 1935, in Hall, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Atha Thomas and Agnes Clara Smith Haddix.
On April 9, 1960, she married Kermit Dale Long, who preceded her in death on May 14, 2016.
She is survived by three sons, John Michael Long, David Allen Long and Kermit Dale Long II all of Gaines; two grandsons, Dale Gene Powers (Erica) and Michael Long

Bill regulating vape shops moves in House Committee

CHARLESTON — A bill sponsored by Del. David McCormick to curb the expansion of businesses pushing vape and e-cigarette products made it through the House Health and Human Resources Committee Monday afternoon.
