Volunteers play music to soothe shelter animals

DENVER (AP) — It’s often said music is the universal language of humanity. Now a 12-year-old Houston boy is putting that to the test for an unlikely audience — man’s best friend.
Yuvi Agarwal started playing keyboard when he was 4 and several years ago noticed his playing soothed his family’s restless golden doodle, Bozo. He grew curious if it also could help stressed homeless animals.
With help from his parents, who both have backgrounds in marketing, he founded the nonprofit Wild Tunes in 2023

Manipulating information

Sen. Bill Cassidy, the Republican from Louisiana, is also a doctor. He put up resistance last February to Donald Trump’s choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “Bobby,” as Trump likes to call him, has long cast doubts on the safety of vaccines that have saved millions from death or serious disease while causing almost no problems.
Kennedy is an ignoramus on such matters and has a few loose screws besides. But Cassidy ultimately gave in, presumably to

Trump’s latest rejection of intelligence assessments reflects a long distrust of spy agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s fights with the intelligence community were a running theme of his first term as he raged against an investigation into his campaign’s alleged links to Russia. Now, a sequel is playing out as Trump battles to shape the public’s understanding of his foreign policy gamble in Iran.
An early U.S. intelligence assessment said Iran’s nuclear program has been set back only a few months after American strikes on three sites last weekend. The Republican

States can block Medicaid money for health care at Planned Parenthood, the Supreme Court says

WASHINGTON (AP) — States can block the country’s biggest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid money for health services such as contraception and cancer screenings, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.
The 6-3 opinion by Justice Neil Gorsuch and joined by the rest of the court’s conservatives was not directly about abortion, but it comes as Republicans back a wider push across the country to defund the organization. It closes off Planned Parenthood’s primary court path

Wren Baker discusses state of college athletics

MORGANTOWN — It was a vacation well earned by Wren Baker, the West Virginia athletic director whose last year has been spent in courtrooms and meeting rooms, to say nothing of locker rooms, as he was doing his part to reshape the widely changed world of college athletics.
It wasn’t at all what he signed up for, but it was what was on the table and the last couple of years had been unexpected havoc from dawn to dusk as coaches came and went, players came and went and lawsuits were filed and
