Marshall had one of two ways to reach bowl eligibility. It could win Saturday’s Sun Belt Conference game against Appalachian State to reach the needed six wins and end the bowl hopes for the Mountaineers at the same time.
Instead, the Mountaineers put the Herd bowl hopes on hold and extended theirs thanks to rallying from a 12-point deficit to edge Thundering Herd, 26-24, on a 23-yard field goal by Dominic DeFreitas with 2:06 left to play at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.

Marshall and Appalachian State have had a fiery rival on the football field going back to their days in the Southern Conference and as NCAA Division I-AA standout programs.
The teams are now fighting to gain bowl eligibility.
Marshall (5-5, 3-3) needs a win to accomplish just that, while the Mountaineers (4-6, 1-5) can’t afford another loss and are hoping to end a four-game losing streak.
Kickoff for Saturday’s matchup is 2:30 p.m., and the contest can be seen on ESPN+.
