Calhoun County Commission accepts resignation of accused commissioner, appoints replacement

GRANTSVILLE, W.Va. — Jacob McCumbers, the Calhoun County Commissioner facing charges after allegedly sexually abusing a child, has resigned.

McCumbers, 39, of Arnoldsburg, was arrested last month and charged with 50 counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian.
According to a criminal complaint, a teenage boy alerted the State Police Child Victim Unit about McCumbers’ alleged abuse. The complaint said the boy stated McCumbers abused him for eight or nine years and

State GOP taking applications for 7th Senatorial District vacancy through Wednesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Republican Party is looking to fill the opening in the seventh Senatorial District that came open when Mike Stuart resigned.

Stuart resigned last Thursday after he was confirmed as the new general counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The GOP will take applications through 5 p.m. Wednesday. At that point, the Senatorial Vacancy Committee will meet to look over applications and resumes and compile a list of applicants

One dead, another injured in weekend crash in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. — A man is dead, and another person is injured after a single-vehicle accident on Sunday in Jackson County.
Information first released Tuesday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said that David Scott Tackett, 45, of Ripley, died at the scene. The wreck was reported on WV Rt. 2 and Point Pleasant Road at around 5 o’clock Sunday morning.

WVU police identify 3 suspects in campus area burglaries

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University Police said investigators have identified three suspects in a series of burglaries near the downtown campus in Morgantown.
The burglaries were reported Tuesday at 692 North High St. and 216 Belmar Ave. The crimes prompted WVU Police to issue a campus warning.
“The reports came hours after the alleged crimes, and there are indications the buildings were accessed through unsecured doors or windows,” a news release said.

Morrisey says state will continue paying to keep national parks open through Bridge Day and beyond

Gov. Patrick Morrisey said today that the State of West Virginia will continue paying to keep national parks open during a key tourism season as the federal shutdown continues.
West Virginia’s “donation agreement” to keep national parks open in the state began near the start of this month. Originally, the state was aiming for 14 days. Now that the shutdown has stretched on, Morrisey said the state’s financial support to open the parks will continue.

Larger range, situational training coming to Kanawha County Law Enforcement Training Center

Justice Holdings asks for quick consideration to halt foreclosure sale of Glade Springs lots

Lawyers for Justice Holdings are asking a circuit judge to quickly halt a foreclosure sale of about 400 lots at the Resort at Glade Springs.

Justice Holdings is a company owned by the family of Senator Jim Justice, R-W.Va.
Several hundred lots owned by Justice Holdings are up for foreclosure sale at 9 a.m. Oct. 29, according to a legal notice in Friday’s Beckley Register-Herald.
The sale has been prompted by a longstanding dispute over homeowners fees at Glade Springs.
