Sanders speaks at “Fighting Oligarchy” rally in Ohio County

WHEELING, W.Va. –U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is using his visit to West Virginia to encourage individuals to stand up and fight against a broken system.
“I am here to beg of you to organize around this state, get working class people organized to stand up and fight the fight’s that have to be fought,” Sanders said in Wheeling Friday afternoon.
Sanders spoke at the Capitol Theatre as part of his ‘Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go from Here’ tour, which he launched in February.

Two arrested on child neglect charges

BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va. — Two people are in custody after an investigation led troopers to a residence in the Erbacon community of Braxton County.

Mary Bragg, 51, and James Braggs, 58, are both charged with multiple felony counts of child neglect after two children were discovered to be in their custody in squalid conditions.

Feds ask for personal data for SNAP recipients; WV groups say governor should not comply

Nearly two dozen organizations have asked Gov. Patrick Morrisey to not comply with a federal request to provide personal identifying information like names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and addresses of SNAP recipients with federal officials.

Shooting under investigation in Kanawha County

CROSS LANES, W.Va. — Police were dispatched to the scene of a shooting Friday afternoon in Kanawha County.
The shooting was reported at 12:20 p.m. on Lick Branch Road which is between Cross Lanes and Sissonville.
Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies and state police are on the scene.

Supreme Court says grant will keep Family Treatment Courts open through September

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Supreme Court says it has secured a grant that will keep Family Treatment Courts in operation through September.

The $280,000 comes through a State Opioid Response grant.
State Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Wooton said the funding is much needed.
“The Supreme Court is grateful to receive this grant, which will allow us to continue operating our Family Treatment Courts over the next two months while we pursue other funding possibilities,” Wooton said

Sun Belt hoop slate revealed for Herd

Injuries suffered in wreck near North Marion High School

FARMINGTON, W.Va. — Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning on U.S. Route 250 in Marion County near North Marion High School.
Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and volunteer firefighters from Mannington and Farmington were dispatched to the scene at 6:53 a.m.
One of those injured had to be cut out of the wreckage. One person was flown from the scene and another victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
