Gov. Morrisey declares State of Emergency ahead of winter storm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency for all 55 counties Friday ahead of the significant winter storm that is expected this weekend.
According to the governor’s release, the National Weather Service has forecasted snow accumulations between nine and twelve inches and ice accumulations of approximately two-tenths of an inch. The storm is expected to hit beginning Saturday afternoon and continue through Monday, January 26.

Teacher’s aide arrested after student caught with handgun at Kanawha County middle

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. –A teacher’s aide has been arrested and is facing charges after a juvenile brought a handgun to a St. Albans middle school earlier this week.
Heather Dawn Sherrod, 46, of St. Albans, has been charged with failing to report a firearm. She was arrested Friday afternoon.
The charges stem from an incident Wednesday afternoon when a student at Hayes Middle School was found with a handgun on a bus around 3:15. A teacher on board confiscated the weapon and turned it over to school

WHEELING, W.Va. — In their 11-0 start, defending Class AA state champion Wheeling Central Catholic hasn’t faced a great deal of scoreboard pressure with all of their victories coming by double digits. In Friday’s 74-56 win over 2024 state champion Charleston Catholic, the Maroon Knights used a game-ending 10-0 run to finally pull away from the Irish and move halfway to a perfect regular season.

West Virginia prepares for statewide weather event

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State officials said Friday they are thankful they’ve had a few days to prepare for the big winter storm that is expected to enter the state Saturday afternoon.
“The bottom line is we are all working together. We are very well-prepared and positioned for this event,” Dr. Matthew Blackwood, acting director of the state Emergency Management Division said. “We are continuing to have those conversations at all levels.”

House passes a couple of planks of “Jobs First, Opportunity Everywhere’ agenda

Weeks before the regular legislative session began, House Speaker Roger Hanshaw and members of the Republican supermajority gathered to describe an agenda of economic development and workplace development policies they called the “Jobs First — Opportunity Everywhere” agenda.
Today, at the conclusion of the first full week of the session, a couple of those policies reached passage in the House. They would still need to be passed by the Senate and signed by the governor to become law.

Funeral for Preston County 911 director set for Saturday

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — First responders across the region and the Preston County community are mourning the loss of former director of the Preston County Emergency Management Agency Duane Hamilton.

Impending winter storm will delay legislative activity

The West Virginia Legislature is delaying its Monday activities because of the storm expected to hit the region over the weekend.
The House of Delegates, which normally has morning meetings and then 11 a.m. floor sessions, is bumping the floor session to 1:30 p.m. Monday. Most committee meetings have been delayed until Tuesday at this point, although there are a few exceptions.

Appalachian Power preps for snow, ice damage to power lines

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Appalachian Power is preparing for possible power outages in connection with the weekend winter storm.
“The greatest concern is the likelihood of up to 10 inches of wet snow and light-to-moderate ice (about 0.2 inch) in southern West Virginia, with ice accumulations up to 0.5 inch across much of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia,” a news release from the utility said. “Ice accumulations over 0.25 inch can weigh down trees and electric lines and cause utility

Marshall’s matchup with South Alabama postponed until February

The Sun Belt Conference has announced the Marshall men’s basketball team’s home matchup with South Alabama has been postponed due to an expected snowstorm this weekend.
Originally slated to be played Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, the contest has instead been moved to February 16 with a 7 p.m. tip time.
Earlier this week, the originally-scheduled contest between the Herd and Jaguars was moved up from 4 p.m. to noon.
