Sen. Capito declines salary during federal government shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) announced that she will forgo her salary for the duration of the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The federal government officially shut down on Wednesday, October 1, and has now entered its third day as Congress remains deadlocked over passing a continuing resolution to fund operations.

Pedestrian struck on I-77 causes major traffic delays in Fayette County

FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A pedestrian was struck on Interstate 77 near the 63-mile marker of the West Virginia Turnpike Friday afternoon, just north of Westerly, according to West Virginia 511.
Officials report that all lanes in the area are currently blocked, causing heavy traffic congestion.

Three arrested in Clay County fentanyl investigation

CLAY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Three individuals have been charged following a multi-month investigation into fentanyl distribution in Clay County.
Authorities say the investigation began in July 2025 when Corporal S.A. McDonald of the West Virginia State Police, working with a confidential informant, arranged a controlled purchase of suspected fentanyl from 46-year-old Lorissa Elaine Stewart of Maysel.

WVDNR Announces Duck Hunting Season Dates

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) today announced that several migratory bird hunting seasons will open in October.
From Oct. 4-12, hunters may pursue ducks, coots, gallinules and mergansers. Hunters should note that scaup are included in the daily bag limit for ducks. Seasons for Canada geese, white-fronted geese, snow geese and blue geese are open Oct. 4-19.

West Virginia first to fully reopen national parks during shutdown

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Friday that West Virginia has become the first state in the nation to receive a signed donor agreement from the National Park Service, allowing the state’s national parks to fully reopen during the ongoing federal government shutdown.
“I want to thank Secretary Doug Burgum and the Trump Administration for working with West Virginia to become the first state to fully reopen our national parks,” said Governor Morrisey.

One person dead following vehicle crash on West Virginia interstate

MARTINSBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred late Tuesday night on Interstate 81 northbound.
According to authorities, deputies were dispatched at approximately 11:59 p.m. near the 8.5 mile marker after receiving reports of a Chrysler Pacifica traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes before crashing.

Because of the shutdown, both parks closed their visitor centers, and Harpers Ferry suspended public transportation.

Over 1,000 illegal immigrants arrested in West Virginia in 2025

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In a press conference Thursday morning, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that over 1,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the state this year.
Morrisey said the state has been working with ICE and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem since he took office to help arrest those in the country illegally.

Teenager dead following accidental shooting

GLASGOW, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A teenager was killed early Thursday morning in an accidental shooting in Glasgow, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded just after midnight on October 2 to a reported shooting in the 300 block of 4th Avenue. When they arrived, they found that a teenage male had been fatally wounded.
