April Elick of Bluefield sentenced to prison for COVID fraud

BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – April Elick, 43, of Bluefield, pleaded guilty today to theft of government money. Elick obtained $84,000 in COVID-19 loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and converted loan proceeds for her personal use.

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Ross Jay Bailey, 50, of Cool Ridge, pleaded guilty today to theft of government money. Turnpike travel tops half a million, exceeds last year’s figures for Memorial Day weekend

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Holiday traffic on the West Virginia Turnpike over the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend totaled 369,763 transactions, exceeding last year’s travel numbers by more than 4 percent.
Traffic on the Turnpike from Friday, May 23, 2025, through Monday, May 26, 2025, exceeded 2024’s numbers by more than 24,000 transactions, according to officials for the West Virginia Parkways Authority.

Deputies Say Woman Was Run Over Intentionally, Man Charged with Murder

BOONE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Boone County man has been arrested and charged with murder following a deadly incident last week that initially appeared to be a car accident.
On Monday, May 26, Boone County Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Seng Creek, near Whitesville. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered 61-year-old Sarah Callender, of Whitesville, lying near the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
