WV September tax revenues add to surplus

CHARLESTON — Tax collections for West Virginia’s general revenue fund in September came in above estimates for the month, reversing a slight decline and adding to a small by growing surplus.
According to reports released Wednesday by the state Department of Revenue and the Senate Finance Committee, September tax collections for fiscal year 2026 were $585.7 million, which was more than 8% above the $542 million estimate set by the state Department of Revenue, providing the state a $43.7 million

Man kills 2 and wounds 4 in car ramming, stabbing

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — An assailant drove a car into people outside a synagogue Thursday in northern England and then began stabbing them, killing two and seriously wounding four in what police called a terrorist attack on the holiest day of the Jewish year, authorities said.
Officers shot and killed the suspect outside Manchester, police said, though authorities took some time to confirm he was dead because he was wearing a vest that made it appear as if he had explosives.

Elkins pastor arrested, charged with soliciting a minor

ELKINS – The pastor of the Summit Church in Elkins was arrested Wednesday and faces a felony charge after allegedly soliciting a minor.
Kevin Curtis Jones, 33, is charged with one count of soliciting a minor via computer, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Benjamin Shepler.

Structure Fire on Central Street in Elkins

First responders were called to a structure fire on Central Street in Elkins at approximately 12:45 p.m. today. The Elkins Fire Department, Randolph County Emergency Squad, Elkins Police Department, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police were all on the scene.

(AP) — Jane Goodall, the conservationist renowned for her groundbreaking chimpanzee field research and globe-spanning environmental advocacy, has died. She was 91.
The Jane Goodall Institute announced the primatologist’s death Wednesday in an Instagram post. According to the Washington, D.C.-based institute, Goodall died of natural causes while in California on a U.S. speaking tour.

RCDA hosts ‘beam-setting’ ceremony for new Event Center

ELKINS — The Randolph County Development Authority hosted a special “beam-setting” ceremony on Tuesday for the new Event and Conference Center that is being constructed behind the Elkins Railyard Depot.
A final beam — the last piece of structural steel necessary for the Center — was hoisted and put in place after being signed by RCDA staff members and representatives from Ascend West Virginia, who will have a work space at the new facility.
